cost of downpipe

i went to the local muffler shop and the said that the downpipe for my T25 would be inbetween $100 to $200 buck. I was thinking 100 at the most. this is even without a flex section. does that sound kinda pricy?

Re:cost of downpipe

for the welding, fabrication, mandrel bent material (i hope), and labour it doesnt sound bad

But Im sure you could easily grab one off of here used, with a small flex section for under $125

Price doesnt sound to horrible though

Re:cost of downpipe

thats just it. Its going to be a 2.5 crush bend with no flex section. They said the hardest would be welding a piece for the wastegate to the main exhaust. Im going to go up there tommoro and ask them how much it would cost for them just to do the bottom part. then ill get crafty with a grinding wheel or something and make a piece to get that covered.

buy a cheap welder....thats what i tell everyone with dp/charge pipe questions, lol ;) you will save a ton of money

Re:cost of downpipe

Has anyone here ever used an arc welder for doing charge pipes/exhaust? Harbor Freight has one on sale for $80. I'm thinking about picking it up just for the hell of it.

110/220v Arc Welder

That or this one:

Flux Mig Welder

And for extra ultra supercoolosity:

Auto Dark Welding Helm with Flamer Decals

my downpipe cost 450. so to me that cheap, its also SS mandrel bend with 2 o2 bungs.

Re:cost of downpipe

if i had no choice but to pork out $100-$150 for just a down pipe i'd buy a cheap $140. gasless welder and weld my own downpipe and charge pipe. a local welder fabricator guy who also made mt manifold charged me $100 for my charge pipes welding, oil pan welding, wastegate bracket, and down pipe. you're better off buying a welder to be honest with you.

Re:cost of downpipe

exhuast tubing is pushing it with a 115V welder. Although they say it can 'weld up to 0.250" ' it will definitely not give a good penetration past 1/8" If you are going to spend money, might as well spend a little bit more to get a nice gas 220 mig. You can not seriously beat a Lincoln or Miller 180. Get a cylinder of gas and your set. FYI, flux cored wire sucks ass. And if you ever take something to get repared and it was flux cored to begin with, you have to grind it all out PITA. for $800 you can get a 220v 180A Miller with tank of gas, mask, gloves, wire and be set for the next 25 years. You might say, 'I dont have a 220'. Combine 2 of your 110/115 circuits in your garage fuse panel to get 220/230 and buy a outlet. Directions are easily found on the web.

As for the downpipe. People don't work cheap. Most welding shops charge 60-75 an hour with a 50 minimum. Put in an hour of tube fab and hour of welding (conservative) you've got yourself $150. Plus they usually screw you anways and add another 50 for shits and giggles if its not someone you know. You can get the piping for $20 and flex for $30-40. Put together 20 dp's and sell them for $100 and you've made back the money you spent on the welder.

I made mine for about $3.00 including the flanges. ;)

I wouldn't pay over $100 for a downpipe. However, when most shops hear "turbo" and "custom" I think they just assume they can rape you, so they do.

Re:cost of downpipe

the best price in down pipe fabbibg will be found if you can find someone that does that type of thing for money on the side or someone that'll go to your house with their welder and do it on site. don't take your car to meinakee and expect for them to make a downpipe for $40.

as soon as i get my car back from the shop, ill post pics, the reason for it costing so much was because i live in Fairfield County, ever shop around here charges 100bux and hour, ill i had to pay for was the labor, not materials or weld wire and gas. and yes the thing is mint, 100% tig welded. and im sure if you wanted it to it could give head

Made mine for about $30. It's the 3" one without the flex pipe on it. The flexpipe one was the first piece of ---- downpipe I ever made. My 3" is a little cleaner. lol

Re:cost of downpipe

hey whitey, for the tiny angles on the downpipe, do you know if there is any decrease the flow because it is not a smooth flow when air goes through it? BTW, your fabbing is looks good ;D

tranceminister 11-10-2004 07:32 PM

Re:cost of downpipe

haha, my first one had those angles on it. I'm sure it was decreasing flow because I had all kinds of welding wire stuck in there and everything. All I had to cut the angles with was an angle grinder :P. But I suppose it you do it cleanly and correct, you won't have that much disturbance in flow.

I don't think my bends decrease flow at all. If you clean the bends than there's nothing for the gases to swirl on and therefore there is no loss in performance. And plus, its a 3.5 inch downpipe on a D-series motor, the sizing alone is over kill.

Here's a pic of the inside, judge for yourself if you think it wouldn't flow smooth:

Re:cost of downpipe

im going to go up there tommoro with my car and see how much they would charge me for just the 2.5 piece not including the wastegate piece. If its fairly cheap, which it should be ill get them to do that. then just weld a piece for the wastegate

i'm so glad I got my own welder and do my own stuff, I hate bring car to shops knowing that i'm going to get ripped off and still have to bite the bullet.

Whitey i dig that DP ;D are you running 3.5 all the way back or does it turn down somewhere?

I did have a 3 inch exhaust and was thinking of making a 3.5 but exhausts piss me off so I think I'm just going to run an open downpipe. Hopefully its not too loud

oldschoolteg 11-11-2004 10:07 PM

Re:cost of downpipe

i used to run with no down pipe period :o straight off the turbo. It was loud when my wastegate leaked but after i fixed that it was pretty quiet but still had that odd sound. I kinda like the coal truck turbo sound :-*

Cost me $25 with enough piping to reach the stock resignator and have about 2 feet left over...

Didn't take 10 mintues to build, but it kicks ass !!

Re:cost of downpipe

Holy ---- :D. That things got more angles than the freaking Stealth bomber. Must have taken a bit of time to get it all perfect. I learned the hard way that mandrels make it so much easier in some cases.

89dxhunchback 11-13-2004 03:13 AM

Re:cost of downpipe

mock weld, mock weld, mock weld.... that's about it... It took more than 5 hours and less than 9hours to build... Works great though.

I got a comp. wheel upgrade and turbine clipped, but added the larger DP and MBC... My boost response is the same, even with the "bigger turbo".
