Which Clutch?

Hey guys, im pretty recent to this site, i havent posted much, but i read like everything that goes on here. I have my turbo kit in hand (the ssauto kit) and I am getting ready to get everything done hopefully before i have to go back to school, end of january.

Anyways I was wondering which clutch you would suggest for my d16y7 w/ t3/t4 turbo, stock internals. I am going to be pushing around 8psi and I could possibly be upgrading the internals later on....Any advice would help, thanks alot

Hey,

Since you're new, I'll give you few tips. A lot of people are going to mock you for not doing your research and buying a kit from SSAC.

You need to upgrade the exhaust manifold, before you use the the SSAC one. It will literally fall out of your engine bay and ---- up everything. Mike from LSD Racing will get you a good price on a quality manifold.

Secondly, dont forget a clutch. Upgrade the clutch before you even do anything because as I learned, it will immediately fail under boost. Because the clutch and the flywheel are in the same place, you'll save yourself a lot of labor if you upgrade the flywheel at the same time. LSD Racing kinda specializes in clutches, so just talk to Mike about that too.

TOTALLY NOT TRUE.

Yes boost=more power which equals more stress on the clutch, but I (and many others) are still running a stock clutch. Granted if your motor has 4728743 ------- miles on it, then yeah when you boost it, it won't hold worth ----. But if you have a low mileage motor, it should hold 8 psi, unless of course it's beat, or something else.

Of course if you're going to do it anyway, then by all means. Preventative maintenance ;)

go to ebay and type in XTD clutches, they used to be quite more, cheap but ---- it i paid 170 for a stage 3 6 puck, just got my stock flywheel resurfaced. but they have had a ton of good reviews on HT ive seen people have been very happy with them, in nissans,hondas,ect..

Yes i know about the manifolds, im not that worried about it right now, my question was not addressing whether or not i needed a clutch, it was WHICH clutch would i be looking for?

Actually you're right. It wasnt until my clutch saw some 15psi runs that it started slipping and thats at 100k miles. But after that it didnt hold past 5k even at 7psi. However, just because you don't notice your clutch slipping, doesnt mean it isnt slipping. It's very possible that you're losing rotations not big enough to show on the tach, but it's still costing you some power.

It depends on what you want to spend, how driveable you want it, and how much torque you expect. Easiest thing to do is to ask Mike. His screenname is LSDMotorsports and he is a sponsor in the classifieds section. He deals clutches to probably 90% of HMTers so he hears your question daily.

I have an ACT 6 puck unsprung in my Celica, and one of Mike's 6 puck unsprung clutches in my Integra. Both hold up find, can't really tell a difference.... but Mikes was a lot cheaper ;)
