ching chong turbos

just how many of ya'lls are actually using meow mix turbos??

i'm considering CDM goodness for a cheap build...i doubt i can find a JY turbo thats big enough & in decent enough shape for what i want to do

Re: ching chong turbos

The general consensus is that they are junk. Ive seen them dead in less than 100 miles, but ive also seen them last 10K miles. Seems hit and miss, but the majority are miss.

They can be made reliable with garrett internals and such, but by the time you get it to that point, and paid for it to be rebuilt, you could have bought a 'real' turbo.

How long does it need to last is the question.

Run the part number. Being a T04B I'm pretty sure it's somewhat down on power for the label "T04", the majority of T04B are the 340-370 whp units sold on Treadstone kits or that BLAAST turns out or else are 60-1, etc. That one might operate in the 400-ish whp range, but the turbine side is huuuuuuge.

the turbine worries me, cuz this will be a RMT set up...with a 312 roller feeding it, looking for 400whp @ no more then 8-10lbs of boost

anyways, this is what i came up with after a quick search;

1976-1986 Navistar DT466A; 466CID16D- 180hp 2WCHP

it always seems to me, that a rough rule of diesel turbos is to get one from a truck having roughly double the displacement...HX35s are on 5.9s & people love them on 1.6-2.4L motors...so i need something from around 10-11L of displacement, that AR turbo is like 7.6L...so i'll guess i'll move on

Re: ching chong turbos

That Airesearch turbo on Ebay is good compressor wise. It's the V-trim compressor. You could find a JY T3 and use the turbine bits off it so you can have a T3/TO4B v-trim. You'll need a smallish turbine for a RMT.

Why don't you just buy a giant Garrett off Ebay, find a good P-trim turbine wheel and turbine housing (I've got them for ya) and make a T4 with a P-trim turbine and like a 4088 compressor side? Prolly get it done right for $400>. Lots of options like that. Or just buy a TO4S off Ebay for like $110, source a T31 turbine and housing (I got those too) and then build a T3/TO4S?

That way you don't have to go CDM, but you can get what you want for around the same price. I'll do a write up if you want, or if you don't know how, I can give you instructions. As long as you have things professionally prepped; you can do lots of inexpensive Frankenstein turbos that'll knock ur socks off. ~$100 for the proper straightening, polishing, and balancing and then you do the assembly so you don't have to pay a shop $300 to assemble a turbo lol. It's all in the prep work which IMO has to be done by somebody with the high dollar machines. Anyone can assemble a turbo properly if they have good knowledge or information and are using the correct parts. All you need is a torque wrench, dial indicator, calipers (not 100% necessary), and some hand tools. Then take the finished CHRA back in for a VSR balance and you've got a zero mile Garrett hybrid for ~$400>.

thanks for the suggestions, tho i'm very paranoid about taking apart turbos, i'll rip apart anything else, but for some reason, i'm not comfortable with turbos yet...i'd prefer to just buy it & slap it on...maybe i'll keep sniffing around for now, hell i still got to put the new motor in the car yet :S

A write up on this would be great.

Well, my EBAYT3/T4 with wastegate is still running 200 miles later.... ::)I am going to inspect it some tommorrow and make sure the bolts are all tight still in all the right places. I am running it with an oil restrictor.

You've been exposed to too many ignorant dickholes who own stock Mustangs, and not enough real Mustangs, or else you'd love Mustangs, too.

Pretty much. Ive been for a ride in one really well built mustang built for road racing not drags. It was amazing. But unfortunatly the guy who owned it was not a real car guy he had bought it from one. It scared him so about five years ago he took it apart and it still sits in pieces to this day. :-[

All the others Ive met are v6 guys saving for that 5.0 swap.

I hate mustangs. My ol lady has an 06 and for what it is, it's slow a hell. I really like how you find fox bodies with sbc/ls1 or ls2 motors in them. Kinda sad when even Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords magazine says the Chevy motors are the way to go.

Masterpower is for all intent and purposes a garrett turbo without the watercooling option. MP is licensed by garrett to use their designs as they want. Pretty good deal overall. I have yet to hear a single legit complaint.

Tom-Guy 01-26-2009 09:37 PM

Re: ching chong turbos

They are assembled in Brazil with some occaisional QC issues. Every so often you hear of a run of compressors getting the faces of their inducers slightly marred because somebody put a pallet of heavy ---- on top of them when it came time to run out the door and fiesta.

That being said, Master Power stands behind them and you won't get ripped off. I'd buy a Master Power turbo.

Re: ching chong turbos

sounds like its perfect. i've been doing alot of research, seems like people who are blowing seals aren't running restrictors, so yeah, their fault, not the turbo

i don't need the watercooled bearings anyways, this is going out back, way less heat to deal with...i may have a seperate oiling system for it too...instead of running lines all over the car, i could make a system that will sit in the spare tire well, with a little pump, sump & cooler

so i think i'll get a MP T70 with a .68 A/R
