Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
1 Attachment(s)
ok so heres my home made turbo setup (%100 done in my garage)
Attachment 28449 the manifolds work fine however a big issue... heat the turbo is melting everything... im getting new manifolds next week, from there ill cut em open and weld in my 45mm wastegate flange and 3" vband to the dump pipe while its on the car the new manifolds will be front mount for heat reasons, now the pipes will be steam pipe(thick) should i heat wrap it or ceramic coat it??? what will work better for the cost??? btw she pulls hardcore with the new 570cc injectors and 600hp fuel pump @ 12psi |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
------- nice man. I personally would heat wrap, but thats just me.
|
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
If you get them ceramic coated inside and out it will do a lot for the heat.
You could also just make a heat shield for the items that are nearest to the heat. |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
Where abouts in AUS are you from?
I'm in Melbourne car looks sick dude 8) |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
cheers :)
im from melbourne mate, eastern suburbs, drop me a email (paradox616@hotmail.com) yeah ive got my dump pipe heat wrapped but im thinking ceramic coating will stop the new manifolds from rusting inside/outside and it will look mint too... can they colour ceramic coating?? |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
hmt aus crew coming soon..lol
|
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
Wrap insulates better but can lead to cracking of the manifolds due to uneven cooling. It also can contain moisture that will lead to rusting.
The best thing is to do both |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
Best for the money, heat wrap. (unless you got da hookup)

yeah well i keep melting leads :S ive heard about the cracking part with heat wrap |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
with just ceramic coat on my sideblaaster header, I have not just melted, but set the distributor on fire!!!!
it sure looks good, certainly helps keeping the heat inside, but doesn't prevent radiations whatsoever from my experience and DEI wrapping is a much better insulation. Of course, a combination of both is perfect. It prevents the wrap from rusting the manif when wet. example of wrapped ceramic header |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
CHEERS! lol pipe city!
lol setting things on fire isnt cool! |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
Yeah, this one was a bit extensive, I admit, but it works good.
Back to your amazingly mean looking setup now, I forgot to suggest one more thing: A sheet metal heat shield covering the hot spots and/or the meltable parts makes also a whole lot of difference and is cheaper. too. aluminum checker plate is my material of choice for that. |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
hehe despite the fact i like it... i do believe i have a big crack in my dump pipe :( probbly from being stressed and wrapped :( and too thin
i wont need any shields where its going, i think ill just wrap it.. btw your setup looks nutz! damn 4 bangers! sooooo easy to do... |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
If you decide to make a heat shield you can do what we do. We have some Asbestos cloth and we sandwich it between 2 pieces of sheet metal. The effect is awesome.
|
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
AHAH!!! an asbestos sandwich does sound like a pretty good insulator but it's a banned product over here!! supposedly, it gives you cancer!!
the factory turbo wraps on the ford powerstrokes are made just like that. Lets ruin to the junkyard! |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
Yeah I bought a box full of Welding Gloves made from the stuff a while ago and have been cutting them up when I need it. :D But you can still order it or something similar, any sort of heat/flame resistant cloth should work.
|
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
I thermal wrap every ------- single hot piece in my engine bay, even did my hot side charge pipe since it runs to close to the rad and downpipe
Its only like $25 for a 50' roll of the thick good ---- on Ebay |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
damn that's cheap. At autoparts stores near me, they're like 50 bucks for less wrap I think.
|
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???

Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
good price but it looks fluffier than the DEI.
Such wrap tends to flake away over time, DEI are very keen on proposing you their silicone paint to freeze the tape in place but the coloured paints makes it look like ----. Transparent paint (high temp clear coat) makes a cleaner job IMO. |

but when you start the car up, moisture is gone, no ill effects.
My header started rusting where the heatwrap WASN'T. Oh yeah, those pics are after 8 years..... http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m...ec/header1.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m...ec/header2.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m...ec/header3.jpg |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
if iremember my metallurgy correctly, it makes total sense.
A steel rod half soaked in water will rust first imediately over the water level. not in the water. So basically, it rusts where the voltage (very small voltage due to differences in surface tension between wet and dry) or even simpler, or most probably a combination of both, it will rust first where corrosion can be fed by oxygen the most. |
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
we have a winner :)

Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???

Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
If you have the money, get them ceramic coated... But, if your on a budget, just wrap it...
|
Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
Heres my Heat Wrapped J-Pipe, the diffrence is amazing and once the down pipe is done I will be wrapping that also. . I like the look of the heat wrap, but once I have the $$ ill pull it get it coated and re wrap it. Local place only charges $15/ft to coat inside and out with 2000deg ceramic.

Re: Ceramic Coat or Heat Wrap???
Coatings never do as much as wrap.
With coatings, you can still feel the heat coming off a manifold. With wrap, I can actually grab the wrapped manifold and not burn myself. |
