Default Catch Can and Other Questions...

After doing a little re-search it seems that for my application(SOHC) that routing the catch can like so is the best way:

PCV - Can - Pre-Turbo Intake

This setup would have a breather on the valve cover. Is a breather filter on the valve cover bad for the motor?

Right now on my short ram intake, I have my PCV(I think) hose that would connect to the stock intake on a breather filter. Why get a catch can if it works fine(or at least I think) like it is? Also, I understand that the PCV closes under boost anyways.

With the IAT, would it be better to extend the sensor to the pre-turbo intake or do a resistor mod to bypass the sensor all together?

People use a catch can for exactly that. It acts a can that catches oil. Most peopl will put some sort of steel or plastic mesh inside of the can to increase the surface area that the oil is exposed to and allow oil vapors to actually collect and become oil drops in the can. It is not ideal to have a ---- load of oil vapors to actually enter the intake arm and into the intercooler and throttle body. But wtf do I know I havent done it on my car yet.

I am going to go PCV-catch can with a breather. I just tied my whole IAT with a zip tie to the rest of the harness.

I understand how a catch can works and everything, but what I am trying to say is that I already have my PCV(I think) hose that was connected onto my stock intake on a small breather, and if I put a breather filter on the valve cover then I would not need a catch can because no hoses are being routed to my pre-turbo intake.

And like you described: It is not ideal to have oil entering the intake. So I would be using the catch can soley for this purpose?....

i had my iat like that and i decided to hook it up. i placed a larger 5/16" T in the BOV line and i got a 3" section of 3/8" hose. put the iat in the 3/8" hose and connect the hose to the T that's inline with the BOV line-hose. clamp all that down with small hose clamps. i used small hose clamps on all my connections for vac/boost. the car idles better and has better performance than before in low to mid high acceleration. it idles better too.

here's a diy catch can that i'm using and i made my own. i connected it like in the diagram with the breather on the valve cover.

This is a DIY oil catch can with a sight tube.

this is the completed catch can without the flat black spray paint (it's outside drying now)

catch can with water tubbing for a water dispenser i installed in my fridge.

I made this catch can with a 7 inch long 2" id pvc tube.
It cost $1.30 at home depot, they sell it by the foot if you don't wanna buy the 10ft tube they'll cut it for you.
The top and bottom are caps for 2" pvc tube .88 each.
the fittings are the small vacuume fittings for the oil viewer but i had some and didn't feel like buying 90 degree vacuume fittings so i just cut 2 Ts' and plugged the hole with jb weld.
As you can see I drilled a hole at the bottom of the container after I glued the bottom cap to the longer tube with some jb weld, not a whole lot, just a light film around the inside of the cap, not the tube.
Then I measured how much of the clear plastic drinking water tube I needed after I installed and glued the 2 90 deg. fittings. Put glue in the holes you drilled in the pvc tube for the fittings so there's something in there to seal it, and glue around the outside hole too.
For the top I just drilled one hole 3/8" and trimmed it some so the 3/8" to 1/4" T would fit. jb weld that in there too for a good seal.
oh, all I paid for this was .88 x 2 for the caps and 1.30 for the pvc tube. and you can never have too much jb weld so I bought some of that too $3.99 I think it was? plus the fittings that I already had, along with the hoses that I had.

Ok. I guess my real question should be:

If I leave the PCV(I think) hose that was connected onto my stock intake on a small breather, and if I put a breather filter on the valve cover then I would not need a catch can because no hoses are being routed to my pre-turbo intake, hence no oil getting into the chare pipes, intake manifold, or engine. Will this work?

this would not work because the would be no suction to open the pcv

yes you need suction the pcv is a one way valve.
