Catalytic converters are either a ceramic or metal core type. The cat burns anything that is not burned by the engine. If you are running excessively rich, the unburnt fuel leaving the engine is ignited in the cat, and will melt the cat's inner core. The ceramic core type cat suffers greatly from this situation. The matalic honeycomb/core type cat is the best one for high performance engines (Import Tuner, 06).

yes to a certain point. The cat can only handle so much. Which is why if you run stupid rich, the cat is forced to breakdown more than it normall does, so it can melt down. The cat can also fail if it runs too clean (which is almost impossible). I got a 3" magnaflow cat from summit, and i tested it with a 5 gas analyzer and the results were pretty good. The cat has a temp change of 57 degrees (over 50 means the cat is working properly), and my car can pass a 2 speed idle test. All i did was dyno it and throw a 3" cat on it

Do what I do.....take out the cat and run without it until you have to go get it tested..
