normally detenation under boost conditions sounds like a ticking more than a ping but theres other types of detenation say like a 87 s10 with a 2.8 if you give that too much timing it makes more of a rattle sound. i guess you just gotta experience it and have the knowlegde to identify what your hearing.

The best way it has been described to me is "pins dropping on glass". Youll know what Im talking about if you hear it, and no, you cant feel it.

If you're really concerned about any detonation, you should get a MSD Knock Alert. When detonation is audible, it's usually pretty severe.

The new hatchback I just picked up sounds like its detonating. I can't tell. The thing is stock, but the owner said the car was sitting for a good 3-4 months with the tank of gas it has now. What else could make a completely stock motor detonate, or am I hearing a strange rattle?

BTW we allways get a goog laugh at the workshop everytime someone tries to make the detonation sound.
they go like : it does "KRI KRI KRI KRI" and then the other says.. nooo it does KRonk kronk kronk.. and so and so anyway its funny
