a friend of mine wants to install an ext. wastegate on his '98 VW passat 1.8T.
is it possible to do that without getting a new trubo? and how can he make it work?

can it be done. yes. should it. no the k03 turbo is super tiny a turbo uprage is a must if you want to make real power.

 

yes. he needs to weld the gate shut, or get an exhaust flange that covers the gate.
then unbolt the actuator and youre all ready for external.

 

can he just install a BOV with his stock setup? and how?

dont waste money on that pathetic turbo or the whale of a car. completly stock that car makes the same power as a b16, figure in the weight of the car (~3000lbs) and you realize its like powering a dump truck with a lawnmower engine, its just not gonna work

 

yes, just hack a section of the charge pipeing on the cold side and put a bov mounted on a pipe in there. or just take the charge pipe and weld a flange on it, and your done. easy ----.

 

yep they have a recirculating. Sounds like your friend just wants his car to be louder.

Just get an APR chip and be done with it.

 

and thats another reason why i hate euro garbage.. they just have to be different by calling it a diverter valve :1

o and thats what your friend is gonna need if you wants to upgrade the "diverter valve" to make it louder

 

its called a DIVERTER valve because it DIVERTS the air back to the compressor


and a chip wont make any difference, he is still not gonna make power on the K03.....180Whp at the most
