Calling all turbo escorts...
I'm trying to help a friend of mine out with a 91 escort gt that he turbo'd. Now, since i'm pretty much a straight up Honda guy, i'm kinda lost here. He's got the twin-cam motor, which is pretty much the same as the Mazda one i've been told, with a t3 turbo, i believe it's a .63 a/r, FMIC, and is set somewhere around 11 psi. For management he's using dsm 450's with a safc. The problem is, around 4k-5k rpms it stumbles bad, then clears up and takes off like a bat outta hell. We gapped the plugs down alot, and still no luck, retarded the dizzy and still nothing. I even played around with the afc settings, and the only thing that sorta worked for a little while was when i set the throttle to 98% low, and 99% high. But after about 20 minutes it started breaking up again. He has a walbro 255lph in it as well, and a fpr with the fuel psi set to around 50 psi at idle. Any of you guys ever had any issues with this before? We even put a MSD 6AL box on that he had laying around to see if it would make any difference, but still nothing. I'm personally at a loss to what it might be :-\

Re: Calling all turbo escorts...
'91 GT is still the 1.9l HO SOHC, unless there's been some engine swap mayhem.
There was a guy named John Smith who had one of the 1.9l SOHCs built all to ----, and knew his Escorts, about 3-4 years back. He posted up to the jyturbo Yahoogroups.com mailling list, and might still lurk there... he linked once to a HUGE Escort tech forum that was about as big as Honda-Tech was at the time. It was at some wack-ass URL, though, so no clue. |

Re: Calling all turbo escorts...
Huh, you're right. Apparently the bodystyle change occurred in '91, I thought it was '93 or somesuch.
It's just a Mazda B6 like went in the later Miata with the intake and exhaust sides switcher-ooed. It's not likely to beat a GSR unless the GSR has something wrong with it. |
Re: Calling all turbo escorts...
have you tried the throttle % crossover at like 20 for low and 21 for high, i had to do this on one of my old turbo civics

Re: Calling all turbo escorts...
wow i almost needed a shovel to get through all the bs in here.....
But yeah im running the same motor but i never really used the safc. The only thing i can think of is that around the point the second set of intake runners opens up and that would probably cause a stumble if you didnt take that into account. Any more info on the setup? |
Re: Calling all turbo escorts...
Isn't 50 psi kind of high on the fp?
