Boosted D16 runs shitty..

1 Attachment(s)
99 EX Coupe, D16y8, Stock Block, DSM t25 gated at 8psi, DSM 450's w/resistor box.

I have an exhaust leak (pretty quick fix, just need some better bolts and two gaskets..)

Heres the new situation... There is an issue with the wastegate, it's not opening, and I'm boosting to like 20psi. When I crawled under the car to check it out, I noticed these two bare nipples. I believe they are supposed to be connected to each other. So, I connected them and started up the car. All of a sudden it ran like crap. Its kinda like it runs when there is a vacuum line unhooked, real rough.

Attachment 33040

Any thoughts on what the problem might be? I disconnected the vac line I put between those two nipples thinking it would go back to running smooth, and it didnt...

Disconnect the wastegate and replace it with a spring and see if that helps.

if you boosted to 20psi on a stock block you might have toasted it and it's unrelated to the vac line connected at this point. do a comp test. where did you have the vac line for the wastegate prior to? from what it sounds like in your post you didn't have your wastegate connected at all?

what about a better picture with how the wastegate goes.

I only spiked to 20 psi once and it was for a breif second. Hard to tell whether or not it actually went that high anyway, considering stock map can't read it.. BUT, The car did run perfectly fine for days after it happened, so I'm pretty sure that's not the case. But thanks for your suggestion.

As for a pic of the wastegate, I will get a better one up later today when I get home from work.

Any other ideas??

Oh, and I shamefully admit that I did NOT have the wastegate connected at all when I got my tune done.

Could hooking the wastegate up have affected my A/F ratios?

prob.ly not. but how do u "tune" it if it keeps on spiking up and down

Re: Boosted D16 runs shitty..

We tuned while gradually upping the amount of load I put on the motor. While just "regular driving" and cruising, all my a/f ratios were set up perfectly. We did get a few ok pulls at like 50-60% throttle, and that was enouch to make sure that my A/F's were cool while boosting. The only thing we didnt get to do was WOT pulls, due to the fact that when I hit WOT, the boost just keeps going up and up.

sounds like your wg was never hooked up, b.c if it was working u wouldnt spike.

u could connect the wg to the nipple on the comp housing, or from the mani to get a more accurate read. since u could see a boost drop in your pipes and IC....just my .02

Heres a short vid of how its running right now. It obviously has an exhaust leak, but that wouldnt be the reason why it's running so rough would it??

Other than the leak and some mad valve noise, it sounds like it's running fine in that video. Try and get something with some better quality to post up.

Re: Boosted D16 runs shitty..

how much psi did you tune it for w/ partial throttle? if it spiked to 20psi it definately went way lean and too much timing. i've run 14psi on my y7, but i wouldn't think it could take a 20psi spike.

connecting the compressor outlet nipple to the wastegate shouldn't cause it to run or idle rough. it's got to be something outside of that.

I'm going to fix the exhaust leak tonight when I get home, hopefully that will clear some of the roughness up...

Re: Boosted D16 runs shitty..

UPDATE! The car ran a LOT smoother this morning with air being much cooler. I think the roughness is partially due to the 95+ degree weather we've had here over the past couple days. It's not the only thing causing it, but it makes a big difference.

Unfortunately I didnt get time to tinker last night because my future inlaws came to town.. But tonight I will be getting the gaskets into the exhaust, checking all my vacuum lines (ought to be fun.. ::)) and taking it from there. I'll also be doing a compression test, just for peace of mind.

If anyone has any other suggestions please post up, thanks for your help so far!

well if the air temp is ------- with it then i'm willing to bet that the IAT sensor is changing the mixture (like it's supposed to) but in your case it's just ------- up your tune. Sounds like you could disable closed loop mode for a quick fix possibly. What are you using to tune? uber, crome?

Re: Boosted D16 runs shitty..

Crome. How do I disable closed loop, just plug the o2 sensor wire back in?
