Blow BY??? WTF? Piston rings?
Okay this first question is a bit weird and has not been figured out yet. When I am driving my car and am in gear between the RPM range of about 3000 to anything higher and I let off the gas just to coast in gear. When I push the gas to accelerate again the car will puff out a little cloud of blue smoke? WTF??? It doesnt smoke when it idles it doesnt smoke on the down rev (decelleration.) The only other time it smokes is at really high RPM's/ What the hell could this be?
Ohh and do BOV's get louder over time or wear out to where everytime the blowoff it sounds like they are expoding? Mine got really loud last night everytime I go above five punds and let off it makes a really loud PSHHHTTT. Then it does the normal echo effect. I dont know it is weird. |
Re: Blow BY??? WTF? Piston rings?
There are so many variables that could cause the symptoms you are having. Blow by or your rings going bad is definitly a long shot, but could be. I don't know if your car has a maf b/c if you do have one and you're VTA with your BOV, it'll cause that symptom. Maybe your turbo's seals are going. If the smoke is coming out a little after you've let off the gas after boosting, that could be another option. Are you sure it's blue smoke (oil)? If it's more black, you could be running too rich as well. You'd have to give me all the info you've got like engine, mods, tuning, etc. Seriously, start with the obvious. Pull a plug and check it out too, but a boost leak test would be a good idea especially for the BOV symptoms. If your rings are bad a compression test will most likely let you know. I would guess turbo seals, but I've only had my turbo car and been maintaining/modding it for 1.5 years, so someone else will probably know more.

MOTOR
JDM b16a Drag turbo kit T3/T04e turbine turbonetics Drag cast mani Turbonetics wastegate 8psi spring Hondata s200b 3inch mandrel bent exhaust type R intake mani Type R throttle body hondata heatsheild gasket SRP 9 to 1 pistons Eagle rods micropolished crank knife edged Stock sleves SS ferra valves skunk 2 springs and retainers stock b16 cams skunk 2 cam gears MSD external coil MSD digital 6 box W/ two step. That is all I can think of. the smoke is a blueish white. I know that I am running in the stoich area cause i had it tuned recently plugs are all good and so is the compression test. I just cant figure it out. It doesnt smoke at the right time to be diagnosed as piston rings. It has to be something small and stupid. |

What are you running for the PCV? Catchcan?

Re: Blow BY??? WTF? Piston rings?
I had to bring this topic back... because the exactly same thing is happening to me...
In my case it´s a 1.3 swfti gti with a saab gt17 turbo at only 3/4psi... I have a video showing the symptom: http://www.turboproject.pwp.blueyond...pe/Smoke_2.avi or http://rapidshare.de/files/15505125/Smoke_2.avi.html homicydalboy - Is it like this????????? I´m really enclined to worn out rings?????????? |
Re: Blow BY??? WTF? Piston rings?
usually problems as such are related to either worn rings or valve seals

Re: Blow BY??? WTF? Piston rings?
If the motor is built then I think you just need to run a catchcan to get all the crap out of the crankcase. About your BOV, make sure it is working and not eating up your turbo with compressor surge.

I replaced my turbine shaft seal with a stagger gap seal and it seems to have helped with the problem for the most part.. but its weird, after letting my car sit for about a month and driving it again, it smoked REALLLL bad for the first 100 miles, then it settled back in, could this be valve seals? |
