Default In a bit of a predicament. Please offer some opinions.

Hi guys,

I am not by any stretch new to turbo setups, so I hope we can keep this conversation technical.

I was going to be building a very mild D16Y8 setup, all stock internals. After multiple compressor map calculations, I chose the GT28R with a 200whp goal in mind. This car is used for track events. Not drag, but rather auto-cross, so the mid-rpm's are very important to me.

However this year I have decided to build the engine, and shoot for higher power outputs. Ideally I am hoping to surpass the 300whp mark, possibly reaching 350whp, but its not written in stone.

The built engine will consist of Rods and Pistons, and a few other necessities such as bearings, gaskets, etc. The head will be left stock.

Now comes the predicament. I already have the GT28r. It is only rated for 310hp which would probably be in the area of 280whp. I have seen a few VW guys push the GT28R to 300whp, but even looking at the compressor maps, it is way outside the efficiency range. The thing is that I love the spool characteristics of the GT28R.

So, to keep the GT28R and max it out to ~20psi, or should I look into another turbo?

And if so, what would you folks recommend as a good ~300-350whp turbo that would allow me to retain my mid-range on a D16Y8? Ideally I'd like to reach full boost no later then 4000rpm.

Thank you for all opinions, and in the meantime I will be running a few more compressor maps.

I was looking into the Holsets because I have heard great things, but I am afraid they may be a bit large for a D16Y8. It appears most HX35's and HY35's spool near 4500 rpm on a B-series, which doesn't translate well for my needs.

I tried looking for some info on the next smallest one, the HX30, but I haven't been able to find much. It appears that the HX30 may be difficult to track down in the first place.

GT2871R looks very appealing. It's too late for me to run some maps for it, but if anyone has personal experience and can give me a rough idea of what your spool times are with this, I would appreciate it. I assume they are similair to the RS since it uses the same exhaust specs?

im not a guru or anything but i would think buy forged internals but just dont drop cp so you can run low boost on your smaller turbo to keep in the efficent range but still get the power that you want just besure to tune very well or even bump up your cp a lil. Just my thought

Sounds like you need to go worship Jesus with this dude:

GT2871R will do what you want it to, but it's a damn expensive way to go about it. You can get a T3/T04E that spools at 3000 rpms with 8-10 psi by 3500 for a lot less, and since it's a journal bearing turbo holy ---- it'll last a lot longer than a baller bearing unit. Run a mild cam and some valvetrain with the skrill you saved, spin the D16 to 8K and prepare for half the powerband to make great power.

I recommend you do so with a D16A6, but nobody listens to me.

Thanks for your input Joseph,

I have had great success with BB turbo's so I am naturally drawn to them from past experience. I do have an operating budget, but the GT2871R is within its limits.

As far as the T3/T04E is concerned, are you referring to a 50 trim? I am looking at the compressor map for one of those right now, and it looks decent, but possibly a bit large for the job. And you must also be referring to a .48 turbine housing on this? See, I am trying to get to 300-350whp in the most efficient way, and do not want a peaky turbo. Like I said, mid rpms are important, and full spool should come in around 4000rpm.

So if you recommend a T3/T04E, what trim and a/r sizes would in your opinion work best for the goals I have set?

Thank you.
