big man little car
K here is what i need help with, yes i have looked, yes im new to this honda deal, 86 stang gt, gears, pulleys, clutch, 2 chambers, so no problem moving around my big 400pnd ass, so now i have a 93 si, d16z6, im looking at an turbo, injectors, and i.c of a talon, im going to use vitara pistons (i work for suzuki!) and arp fasteners, but i keep hearing about how spindly my rods are, so my question is a: can i get away with 10pnds using this set up? And will that put me anywhere near 13's? Car is full jam except air, and like i said im a really big dude.....oh and have a local shop do a hondata program for my p28....

Re: big man little car
the 10psi will probalbly put you in low 14's, maybe high 13's on 10psi with what you explained.... if your getting rods and tuned you should at least push for 15-17 psi on that talon turbo....

Re: big man little car
definatly want to get rods. D-series rods are toothpicks
|
Re: big man little car
DOn't need Viartas to ru 10psi. Save money there.
Don't need a shop to do Hondata, Save you money, You'll be father ahead by buyer a programmer and running uberdata or chrome, plus you learn more this way and if you ever want to change something you don't need to fork out the cash to the shop. |
Re: big man little car
So ten pnds on stock rods is most likely going to hurt something then? Hmmm, do i need to have the block notched to run eagle's? Well my vitara pistons are only 65 (yes for four) so that's not a big price hit at all....i just have a very limited budget, what about other honda rods? The dealer i work for ownes a honda store as well so i get stuff at cost, but is there any stronger rods in the honda family i can run? Thanks for the input guys, i appreciate it.....

Re: big man little car
Oh and um did you really say 15pnds with rods and vitara's? Can the block handle that? I run a stage 2 bully clutch now, not sure how that would live either, kinda dumb question i know but power levels are what around that level of boost? ballpark?

Re: big man little car
Putting Viartas in is going to lower you compression a bit. They may be a little beter then a Honda Piston, but there still not forged.
Personally, I would never waste my time with them even if they were free. BBKA runs 12psi Stock block, rods, pistons, head and has 230whp and lays down 12sec passes. It's all in the tuning. People have put 250whp stock. How long that will last???????? Your rods will handle 10psi no prob. If you tune right, the pistons will too. The durability of your motor at 10psi is all in you tuning. I have run 9psi with 20+psi spikes while trying to turn it up to 12psi. It has been like this for 1.5yrs, and the motor is as strong as the day I boosted it. The only thing I broke was a Head Gasket, not bad for a 17yr old motor. |
Re: big man little car
That's some big boost spikes, well the shop i will use to tune knows their ----, the guy that ownes it runs a low low 11 sec civic, and a 10 sec talon, they have an in house dyno so he will do my p28. My biggest goal is to run a 13 anything, i have an apprentice tech that works for me at my shop, he has a 92 hatch, zero options, with a j spec gsr driveline, runs 14 flat on radial at 99mph in like 90degree weather, that being said he has big money in teh car and laughs at H.M.T when i tell him about the nutso ---- you guys do with your cars....so i wanna spend little or no cash and be able to run door to door with him....ok, so on eagle roda, and vitara's and good good tune, 1g 450's, walbro in tank, does anyone figure i can get away with 15pnds? Um, did i mention teh car and driver are big heavy pigs?????

Re: big man little car
Stock D16 bottom end, thick head gasket to lower CR, ARP headstuds, Y8 or aftermarket IM, and T3/T04E has been a proven combination for 300-330 whp in a D-series. Yup, engine life is short, but at 225-250 people seem to go through ring lands (thermal management problem, not power related) and most of the rod damage is due to detonation or oil pump failure.
300 whp and a 2000 lb car, 11's are just suspension work and practice launching. |
Re: big man little car
The only thing I would say if you really want to do rod/pistons and such is to either fill your block or post while your in there.
Also, eagles are nice but if all your running is Viarta and 15psi, get some tuner toys. Thats what I plan on picking up ina month or so. |
Re: big man little car
Where are you located? I just realize in another post your talking CAN Dollars and your with sympatico.
|
Re: big man little car
Ottawa , yep, ----'s expensive here, well all im trying to figure out is will this live relativly trouble free with vitara's and 10psi? and good tune. Oh yah and one more silly question, timing??? I know jack about teh tuning of these things, when the tune is done im assuming there is nothing in there that's going to control timing of course, so at stock timing and ten psi??? Good, bad or ugly???

Re: big man little car
If your p28 is properly chipped and tuned by this shop you speek of, then it should be fine.
BTW: London Area here. Viartas at 10psi, not probs, stocks at 10psi, still no probs. I still say don't crack open the motor till your ready for a real build. |
Re: big man little car
Um...how cheap does it make me that the motor is a spare and sitting on the shop floor as we speak, so this is my build.....ever hear of bully clutches? Jus wondering if stage two is going to like with 10psi....London eh? That's pretty cool, i assumed mostly everyone on here was stateside....K, so in a nutshell im ok with 10 psi with arp stuff, and the vitara's and stock rods? I have a s.m.i.c from a talon that im trying to mount up front, not the best set up i know, but cheap cheap......ah well, liek i said, my apprentice tech has like 14g's in his car, body, paint, driveline, susp, and 14 flat, as long as i can hang door to door with him, that's all im looking for, his car's pretty, mine's flat black, sleeeeeeeper.......

Re: big man little car
Okay, having an extra block around is fine then. I thought you were going to tear apart the current on to do this. IMO that would not be worth it, but if you have an extra go ahead. At 10psi, good driving skills and a properly prepped chassis, low 13's should be easy on slick and maybe drag radials. That my hopes for tonight on the ZC.

Re: big man little car
What's your set up? Is it raceway park out there...

Re: big man little car
if u spend all ur cash on ur car u may lose some weight and gain a few 10ths
its been proven ;) |
Re: big man little car
ls rods are a bit stronger and dont cost too much. i think you need to mod them a bit but nothing to bad.
|
Re: big man little car
Thanks for the weight loss tip...i needed that, what did the zc run last night?

Re: big man little car
Shitty!!! I not putting out what I should. Look for my other post. I'm going to start messing with the timing. I'm too conservative!
|
Re: big man little car
Ya putting me and the car on a diet im sure would help a great deal, ah well, love power steering and windows, no big amps or silly crap like that tho.....im dying to giv eit boost now tho, i think im gonna set up the turbo and charge pipes on my current motor, at least get a trial fit and tune, plus im kinda curious to see how much boost my 280k motor will handle till it goes boom....
|
Re: big man little car
Man, sometimes Canada sucks, used, yes used turbo....FROM A DSM, 450.00....thats mental.....

Re: big man little car
List on my 14b was 425.00 at the junkyard, I told him I didn't want it,
Me: I don't think I like the Talon Turbo Junkyard Guy: Why? Thought you said it's a nice size for what you want. Me: Well the Saab turbo is only 150.00 Him: I can do 200.00 on the 14b My 14b was like brand new. Looked like it got ran for 2 blocks. Try to talk them down |
Re: big man little car
Yah i tried that, im a suzuki dealer/body shop, so even at our cost he said there are just none out there, hence the big bucks to get me one, im going to try a ford t-bird and see what they have out there, any other idea's for cheaper doners?
|
Re: big man little car
Chrylser Daytonas and Sundances.
Ford, Saab, Volvo, Early Nissan 300zx. These would be my choice now that I am more knowledgable. They are more common, easeir to upgrade, and easier to get rebuilds. I no longer like my 14b Talon Turbo. As for a t-bird. Don't get a post '86 IHI Warner, a little small. Ideally a 84-86 T-bird auto would be best, or a 5spd. The 5spd will be a TINY bit more laggy, but make a slight more power. |
Re: big man little car
Yah i put out a search at my local yards for a t-bird, or early volvo....hope they are cheaper....thanks for the help by the way, this ---- is fairly new to me and i need all teh help i can get....
