Backyard build

25 Attachment(s)
I'll make a proper intro later when I'm good and drunk, but browsing through the recent build-ups and seeing nothing but people decking their cars out in egay ---- prancing around like they've done something is making me pissed off. Here's my build that I did while lurking this site for the past few years without making a single post, there was no need to...the search button worked just fine.

Quick rundown: OBD1 swapped EF, Z6, Si cable tranny, dsm 450's, and a bunch of random ---- thrown together

30lb chunk of 1/2" steel picked up at the local scrapper for $10, strapped down and ready to be made into flanges
Attachment 8514

Chipping the ecu for crome...

Attachment 8515

trusty solder sucker
Attachment 8516

crude ass HF adapter and 14b outlet flanges cut out
Attachment 8517

Attachment 8517

test fitting

Attachment 8519

one size fits all downpipe kit, some work required
Attachment 8520

thank you HMT for first showing me pie-cut bends and the power of flux core
Attachment 8521
Attachment 8522
Attachment 8523
Attachment 8524
Attachment 8525

---- your pre-made gaskets too
Attachment 8526

made the oil return fitting too
Attachment 8527
Attachment 8528
Attachment 8529

bov mounting the old fashioned way

Attachment 8530

14point7.com JAW being put together for the sikkkk tuning later on
Attachment 8531
Attachment 8532

one of the runs to the parts store after I had some thermal issues...
Attachment 8533

and finally, the money shot
Attachment 8534

and the hooptie this is all going into (it came with the color, ford blue tractor paint if you were wondering...---- your JDM too)
Attachment 8535

unfortunately the Z6 spun a bearing 2 days after the build was completed, so an engine swap was in order.

OMG...

patfraser3 04-13-2009 07:33 PM

damn,.. that some real made ----. im suprised you didnt design a new blowoff :P anyways nice build, did you ever run it on a track? if yes what were your times?

anela44 04-13-2009 07:35 PM

Do what you have to do! Better than alot of other people.

anela44 04-13-2009 07:36 PM

At least your doing it rather than waiting for someone to so it for you.

anela44 04-13-2009 07:36 PM

Like alot of guys that I know around here.

No, it put down about 140ish whp and 140tq on a problematic mustang dyno. Got walked on by a 240 with a red-top SR swap and stays dead even with an 04 Accord V6 coupe (had an intake).

patfraser3 04-13-2009 07:51 PM

ahh i thought it would of had more power than that :( what size of turbo do you have on there?

bluebomber 04-13-2009 07:58 PM

My experience with that dyno tells me that it would have put down around 160-170 anywhere else, but its a 14b running off of the stock wastegate (7psi)

patfraser3 04-13-2009 08:00 PM

ahh ok good to know cuz im building a JDM D15b with a t3t4 at 8psi so i guess im looking at around that...

89ef8 04-13-2009 08:01 PM

thats some jenky ass ---- but nice

tkelly278 04-13-2009 08:04 PM

That solder sucker made my day. I have a shop vac in my living room and I've been trying to think of things I can use it for other than vacuuming. ---- vacuuming, hooray beer.

Looking at the home made gasket reminds me, one thing I don't see many people doing here is the axle grease turbo gasket trick. If you have fairly flat flanges, a thin layer of thick axle grease on the flanges will cook and turn into a good seal.

drift_ae86_91 04-13-2009 09:19 PM

damn!!

some handy ass ----! :D

what did you use to make the gaskets?

AaronZ34 04-13-2009 11:24 PM

Yikes....HMT to da max.

zero937 04-14-2009 12:05 AM

damn you have a lot of time on your hands

Claudio157 04-14-2009 08:42 AM

2 days :(

ef4dr 04-14-2009 09:11 AM

haha very nice im impressed... what did you use to cut those flanges it looks like you went with the old oxy/assedeline haha

what axle grease would work for that like strait farm equipment grease or would ford/chevy work? i'd try this for sure

RYANARBOR 04-14-2009 09:48 AM

well done. This is what HMT is all about. Each pic having a "and ---- your......" made my day. Now go ---- yourself :)

jdm_ekrobot 04-14-2009 10:25 AM

Have you lost your mind? You NEVER use birch for this type of pull!

Herculian effort though man, you are the Picasso of fabrication for sure.

Sleep911 04-15-2009 09:59 PM

I absolutely love this forum, I'm not into building home made turbos, but the creativity is awesome! Nice!

tavarish 04-15-2009 11:47 PM

true homemade:)

IowaTCoupe 04-21-2009 07:41 PM

WTF?!?!?!?!?! SHEETMETAL FLANGE for the oil drain?!?!?!?!?!

How does that seal? (It doesn't i'm sure)
You can't even get a bolt down tight cuz the weld is so close to the hole for the bolt.

hahahaha... i remember the days when i couldn't spend 10$ for a flange...

You spend 10$ for the scrap metal, 1$ for the hardware, and $1.50 for the box of cereal you bought for the cardboard gasket....

For my turbo flanges, I spend 12$ on an Ebay flange with shipping and saved hours of cutting, eating cereal, and looking through drawers to find the right bolts...

SOOoooo, you may be more creative, but i'm smarter than you! ]:-> Now i have more time to drink beer and watch you play with your dremel cutting cardboard. Heh Heh Heh

But congrats you got her done...
OH, AND BY THE WAY?!?!?! WHAT THE ---- ARE YOU COVERING UP YOUR POPCORN WELDS WITH HEAT WRAP FOR?!?!?!?!?!?!? take that ------- wrap off, and rock out with your popcorn out!

Skaterdudz02 04-21-2009 08:30 PM

Those welds look like my ----!

Anyways....true HMT at it's finest. I give you props on hoisting the engine out using a tree. Good thinking especially in the backyard.

I bet it seals great.

The outlet flange gasket is cork, what's being cut with the dremel is FelPro Pro Ramic.
