Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

Just curious if anyone runs a t3/t04e on a sohc and whats your setup is like and your thoughts of it. I've always run rhb5 on all my setups just for price and availability of them at my local pick and pull. Now that I've decided to pipe up and make a nice turbo kit. I bought a turbonetics t3/t04e 50 trim stage 3 wheel for a nice price and never have ran a t3 before I'm just wondering is this gonna be like a night and day difference? Hell for the price I couldn't pass it up even if it's gonna be too big or I won't see boost till like 5k. Yeah I know your probably gonna be like ummm night and day, try like...... It's going on a z6 shortblock with a y5 head. Yeah yeah why the hx head but I just like the rollerrockers. Don't ask ::) but vtec activates on 3.5k on my chipped p28 for it so it actually pretty nice.

This is a pretty vague question, but in short, yes.

i have a sohc vw motor with 2L displacment. i was running a 50 trim t043 with a stg 2 .63 ar hotside.
worked fine but i would get surging when i slowly lifted up the throttle during boost.

i now run a "super 57 trim" t04e with a stg 3 .63 ar hotside. i like it better.

boost start at like 2750rpm, full boost by like 4k

i know Jordan(mahcivic) was running a t3/t4 50 trim on his ef hatch... and it was very impressive.

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

I rode in my buddy's z6 with the same size turbo and it lags but boost hits super deluxe at 5k........I'd switch to a 48 housing, that would make it a perfect turbo imo.

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

yeah, i just ordered a t3/t4 50trim 48A/R, i'm curious as to how boost is gonna hit with this turbo on my mini-me, vs. my old t3 60 trim.

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

it'll hit harder and stronger up top

im going to run a .48/60 t3 on my Z6. i have that or some smaller t3 i JUST got today for free,,,but anyways.. So are u saying that this 48/60 should kinda be over kill maybe ?Spool at like 5k god damn... highway races would be a killing !

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

A 48/60 on a 1.6 D series is choice. It will start to spool in the 3300rpm range, and full boost is at around 4k. From 4k to redline, you're gold.

It's the best for D-series IMO.

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

Steve mine doesn`t hit full boost until like 5K+,
it`s not just the AR but the trim and wheel stg AFAIK ???

This seems pretty cool to me then. I just didn't know if this was gonna be an overkill. Well hopefully the BBKA bin Cray modded for me will work.

this turbo is matched really good with the z6 motor. I was getting 10psi at about 3500-3800rpm. i'm just hoping that my t3/t4 50trim spools 10psi no later than 4500rpm :-\.

i think Stealth is talking about a straight T3.

bump to see what rpm does the t3/to4e .48ar hit full boost on a sohc motor

Donald125 04-27-2005 09:36 PM

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

depends one what psi i am at.
i`ve had it at 16psi and it hit full boost by 5K or so at 3rd gear.
as the gear goes up it gets there eariler.

BTW it is .48 hot .60 cold. stage3 wheel , i heard something about lower stages spools up faster ???

Your 3500rpm VTEC engagement is a bad idea. especially on a D

MAJORAHOLE 04-28-2005 04:38 PM

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

ya up that to like 4500

SpankedYA! 04-28-2005 04:39 PM

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

More like 5200-5500. Best bet is to tune your VTEC engagement on the dyno.

MAJORAHOLE 04-28-2005 05:04 PM

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

its right around 5500 stock isn't it??

stillnoturbo 04-28-2005 10:33 PM

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

it's actually drives better at 3500 with my new uber bin from the old 5500 crossover. Cause driving on 3v's till 5500 sucks ball and I have no power whatsoever till that 4th valve opens up at 5500. Now it just feels so much betterwith it that low on the HX head. Plus I want it early cause it may actually make the turbo take longer to spool on 12v's till 5500 since I'd believe it would have as much exhaust coming through. Let me know if my idea is totally wacked out thinking that or if it sounds somewhat logical.

i just got my t3/t4 from Camp1320 this week, it should be in by saturday if everything goes smooth. I have to chop up my downpipe and reweld a 4 bolt flange. now i wish i hadn't sold my crappy wire feed welder.

See, I would think that would be too big. It seems as though it spools to late. I'm not really sure though. I would figure you would want full boost asap on the rpm side. My T3 people are saying it will hit at 3500. That's a .42/.48. So basically someone explain to me why the bigger turbos on the D series are better than say the T2 series turbos. Thanks. Just trying to learn. ;)

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

i ran a 57 trim t3/t4, .48 hot side on a stock z6. spooled up before 4k and reached full boost by 4500. put down 239whp on 11psi. i had also ran a smaller .42.48 t3 and it spooled up a little sooner, but felt no where near as good as the t3/t4 on the same amount of boost. trust me, it's well worth the extra little bit of lag you get.

evosol 04-30-2005 04:59 AM

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

well the t3/t4 is installed! it rips hard at only 8psi... it looks like i'm getting full spool about 4400-4600rpm. The "lag" i was hearing about is over exagerated for this turbo/trim on a SOHC... it perfectly complements the z6 motor in my opinion, i couldn't imagine running something like a t25. i'll get some before and after pics up soon.

i have a 57 trim .60/.63ar to4e thats going to be going on a SOHC but a 2.2L vtec SOHC.

w/ my calculations at 10psi ill be out of the effeciency range until 4000-4500rpms or so but im sure it will rip..

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

alright, pix as i promissed... I'm super happy with this turbo! wierd thing is that my t3 60 trim would fall out of boost going into 3rd, where as this turbo does not fall out of boost at all... I think maybe the turbo i got from down2turbo was kind of shitty on top of bad luck.

old t3 60trim

New t3/t4e 50trim

I finally figured out that no HMT turbo kit is complete without Whitey bends, ---- mandrel.

Re: Anyone run a t3/t04e on a sohc?

How much difference would there be from a SOHC to a DOHC on these turbos? Is there some huge ungodly increase of air flow that allows you to run a bigger turbo or something? Just curious.

i'm not sure what your asking... but my car is a SOHC. I think the t3/t4 50trim, 48 a/r that i'm running would be too small for a DOHC... thats just my opinion, i think most will agree.

also thanks for the compliments, i'm really loving my car right now... i'll be hitting the track this saturday so we'll see what kind of times i can put down in my Del Slow + bald ass Nankang tires :P
