anyone ever done this with a hf manifold???

Well i wanted to try this on my friends turbo setup im workin on. I was curious to know if anyone has ever had a external wastegate on a hf mani??? Maybe make the o2 sensor hole alittle bigger somehow weld on the flange for the wastegate?? Has anyone tried this?? If you have, what kind of welder did you use and what did you use to make the whole bigger? THANKS!

Yep that is exactly what I would do for you, except mild steel would be a better choice of material for the wastegate elbo because of the differnt expansion rates in the material.

Re: anyone ever done this with a hf manifold???

I also managed to put an Audi external onto my HF manifold.

Ingredients:
Audi WG
HF manifold
Fat/large washer
4 long bolts

Flipped the WG over, set the washer onto it and marked where the bolts needed to go. We used them with the bolt head fitting into a notched out spot on the washer. That way the WG could be just dropped down onto the manifold. Once we notched the washer, we put the bolts through the WG, dropped the washer on and tacked them up.

We then used a normal hole sole and cut out the HF manifold to a size larger than the washers opening (washers hole was just bigger than WG). Then used the nice think (gigantic) washer and welded it on the outside to the manifold with a big fat high heat/low speed MIG bead. THEN we flipped the manifold over and put a nice bead from the inside, which actually ended up making a nice flow path into the WG opening. So we double welded it for strength (fear of the cast :p ).

Done, bolt on car, bolt on WG and create dump pipe.

This cleared in the stock ef, just barely though :p I also have about a half inch spacer setup on the back off the hood, so that might have helped a hair.

Its ------- cold out... but car is apart now... so i'll go snap some pics real quick. Brought it all in, waiting for roomie to wake up so i can snag his camera for quick pics.

And pics...

I remember seeing a Tial welded directly to an HF manifold. I can't find the picture though...

Ive seen on brazed on, cast doesnt take to good to haveing mildsteel welded onto it though

Just pickup a log or used log and save yourself the trouble and the money

Re: anyone ever done this with a hf manifold???

I have done numerous hydraulic clyinder repairs that see 40000psi + and 90% of them were all cast iron and I have never had a single one come back to me so I am prety sure it is safe to say that my cast iron skills arn't that bad.
BTW many of these werent just weld a crack, most of these were weld on fittings that had blown off from the extreme pressure, all of the fittings were mild steel and I havent had a single one come back to me for more than a year now.

O RLY? I'll bet you have never even tried to. ------ bandwagon hopper.

Yes, my welds look like bird ---- but this has been holding up for nearly 10k miles now. Mild steel pipe to a cast exhaust housing
