Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
Anyone tried to use copper RTV or something like that for exhaust gaskets. I was just wondering if it actually will work or should I just spend the $30 bux for the new gaskets on the exhaust manifold, adapter plate and downpipe. Also, anyone know any cheaper places to get gaskets? Thanks for any help.

Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
My friend tried it...it worked he just used SILICONE RTV he bought one that should hold up to 750 F It did it's job, but he used his old broken gasket with it,,he just filled up the bad spot.
The Copper gasket would hold better I guess. For the downpipe I would just use the copper gasket if it leaks no worry's for the adapter plate...well get sum gasket mats and make your own |
Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
ghetto? sure! i used sheet metal and cut my own gaskets!

Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
The machine shop guy gave me some stuff they use as gaskets on Boiler doors in power plants :o It seemed fragile but il tell you how it holds up later ;D

Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
Any problem with just getting gasket material at a parts store for $3-$4?
|
Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
Sheet metal here also. Has worked a # of times now.
(for DP flange and manifold to turbo flange) |
Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
Well, thanks for all the useful info. What kind of sheet metal did you guys use, is it just aluminum you can buy at a hardware store?

Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
Tin. Dont know what it was from, just laying around the garage ya' know. ;)

Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
maybe I should just do it really ghetto and make it out of coke cans, ;D

Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
i used that so called high temp gasket material that you get from a auto parts store and i already have a leak in my turbo to O2 housing gasket, maybe that's why i'm not getting any more then 2psi......hmmm, maybe i should fix that this weekend.
so what was said to be the ghetto gasket material of choice? i have a small piece of sheet metal laying around, should i use that or get a piece of tin? should i use the high temp gasket sealer with it? |
Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
yeah use sheet metal..
or use nothing at all. i know of lots of downpipes and turbos which dont use gaskets at all. try it see if it leaks |
Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
are you guys bead rolling the sheet metal gaskets?
|
Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
Nothing at all sounds good to me. If you are using sheet metal which doesn't compress for the gasket, what is the point? Would you recommend just using some sealant? I've got some (rtv I think) that I used to seal a few spots on the valve cover. Would that work?

Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
If you are using sheet metal which doesn't compress for the gasket, what is the point? I also took the DP flange to a machine shop to 'true' it, so having good surfaces is a plus here. I ------- hate exhaust leaks... :) |
Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
My adaptor plate was machined perfectly flat by its maker. HF manifold, plate, and WRX turbo = no gaskets or leaks..
|
Re:Anyone do any ghetto things for gaskets...
All my turbo gasket or out of some sort of sheet metal..it's the stock gasket.
And the Both my ZC headers use a 3-layer sheetmetal gasket...I reuse it everytime...no leaks |
