Default Anybody tought of a way to measure RPM of Turbo.

I suspect the turbo is over spining on a mates setup.
How do you tell if the turbo is over spining.

ANybody given much thought to measuring the RPM of the turbine.

I have this little meter that measures upto 999999 RPM. Its used on modell planes and turbines. Got it on egay for 10$, THe sensor to be placed in front of the blades is tiny size of a pencil tip. Its infrared so I dont think it even needs light to work. Do you think it will work.

it may, but if something breaks, the turbo is toast. turbos spin pretty damn fast, and I wouldn't trust a $10 egay unit to be accurate anyway.

I'm not sure how to tell if it is overspinning...

how the hell are you gonna hold that to the compressor shaft while driving? If your overspinning the turbo it just wont last long at all

Acuracy is garunteed at +-100 RPM.
Ive used it on an engine of mine where we tuned and built a pipe to take the RPM from 28,000 RPM to 36,000 RPM
You dont hold anything.
You put the little sensor with two wires attached pointing at the compresor wheel. You then slide on your rubber join over the wires and clamp down.

Basiclly the same way we measure all our temps.
With 2$ Bead thermocouples.
You buy the thermocuple wire in Rolls Cut to the length you need.
Strip the ends and twist them together.
Then using a TIG welder melt the twist till both wires melt and form a small ball.
Push the ball into you plumbing so the ball is in the air stream. one before compresor one after, one after IC
And you have your temps.
It helps if your using a modenr digital EGT with Auto claibration and cold junction compensation. No bigie National Semicondutors S makes all this on a single chip for like 8$

I don't think it will get a reading off the compressor wheel. It needs to have back lighting to work. Like runing a 2-3 blade prop........

Got a link

I've owned and flown dozens of R/C planes.

There are two reasons why their tach's don't work.

1) They are not responcive enough to read more than a few ten thousand rpm

2) They typically only read one or two blades

3) They work off light fluctuations

why dont you just stick your finger in the turbo, rev your engine and see how fast it can tear your finger off...

Actually thats how we do test spin up speed.
We put our finger in. On the compresor wheel. Start the car and then feel when it starts to spin.

You maybe right about the back light which is why I asked this question. As to other points wrong. The Meter has a seting to chose anything from 2 blade, 3 blade to 4 blade props.

THe make is Flbee Intellitach Digital LCD Tach.
Even if this unit dosent work it shouldnt be too hard to rig up one that does. THat works even in the dark.
