Anybody had any positive experiences with some cheap e-bay turbos?

SSautochrome, or xspower, or OBX turbos? I know i will probably get flamed, but I just want to ask so I can start buying parts.

Re: Anybody had any positive experiences with some cheap e-bay turbos?

honestly i would rather buy a used turbo from one of the members on here.

those turbos are know to fail with the first 3 hours, i have heard of people running them for over 6 months, but these were only rumors.

alos visit blaastperformance if you wanna spend a little more, and have a great setup.

Do you have a link to a new borg warner or holset turbo for that price, and similar size?

BoostedBSeries 04-08-2007 08:59 PM

Re: Anybody had any positive experiences with some cheap e-bay turbos?

i bought my used borg for $120. you can do the same and send it to blaast performance and have it rebuilt to brand new for less than $450. there is one in the for sale section right now for $150 shipped.

i love my borg warner. granted, i have it on a 1.8 liter, but im sure it would spool insanely fast on a 3.0 V6

Re: Anybody had any positive experiences with some cheap e-bay turbos?

I helped a local guy put together one of the SSAC kits on his built b18a1. His ran flawlessly for almost 2 years until he sold the car. Of course we also added an oil restrictor to the setup, and made sure to properly oil the bearings in the turbo before letting it spin. Last time I talked to him (right before he sold the car) he said he was dyno'ing low 400hp with 750cc injectors on Crome pro.

I've got a T4 60-1 on my Z. I'll be running a oil restrictor on it cause alot of what I hear is the seals die out and start spitting out oil.

The other "cheap" ebay turbos are just the deals you just keep your eyes open for!

I have scored well twice, and the third is in great shape, but too big to actually use...

at the very least get a stealthmode oil line kit with his oil restrictor.

Mate of mine ran a xspower turbo and it lasted about a week , also don't go near their manifolds if you don't wana keep fixing it from time to time.
Some have lasted ages , but personally I would just buy a used dsm turbo / turbos for sale of here.

I love XSP turbos. I get tons of them to repair. it's always a big job to fix them properly never just a preventive rebuild like garretts! and since they have never worked for very long, they are easy to take apart!! :y

I'd call that a positive experience. +1 for ching chong.

Re: Anybody had any positive experiences with some cheap e-bay turbos?

maybe im the only one with a positve experience i traded a member on here my garret t3 for his ching chong t3/t4 and it ran mint for around a year before i sold most of that kit. not to mention i was using 4an line too. i would buy a garrett or know brand if you got the cash. i had good experience but there has been 10000000 horror storys or rumors of a friends uncles sisiters love triangle friend that blew his up.

My turbo was made by a company in africa, I support these ---- turbos because it keeps the kids who make them employed and off drugs. These are the three kids who made mine and are partying when this flick was taken.

I too have heard horror stories about the SSAC kits but i was also told that the FMIC are good. i scored a garrett A/R60 and thats what ill use for my kit, as far as the rest of the kit hmmmm i probably get it w/o the turbo.....

you should always use a oil restrictor on turbos anyways its just good practice.

Right blaast?

Well t3 and t4 turbos needs very little oil. 10-20 psi is plenty.
On most automotive cars, oil pressure is like 60-80 ish. if you feed all that pressure through the turbo and it doesn't smoke, you're lucky. Even a brand new turbo on a honda with a 1/8" feed may smoke like crazy according to what i have seen! That's because the center section gets completely filled in with oil and overflows.
i have seen lots of leaking/smoking problems solved by adding the 1/16" restrictor and I never seen startvation problems caused by it. so really, you can'T go wrong.

Guess I'm lucky, my Garrett .48/.60 has never smoked and I don't use a restrictor.

i used the 60.63 57 trim for a while on the last motor ran 12.3 @116 made 280whp never smoked worked great and still runs to this day by a local

Yes, quite possible, many things will help prevent oil leakage such as:
  • your engine has perfect compression
  • you are using a oil feed line that is small enough to serve as a restrictor by itself
  • You have a nice big, straight oil drain
  • You use proper oil such as 10-40 or 5-50, not the ------- 5-30 that is for atmospheric engines.
  • You have a top mount or otherwise High mounted turbo
  • Your feed hose is plugged to the head rather than the block, so you get less pressure but this is BAD for your engine.

Were you using a restrictor? Does it come from me? sorry, don't remember.

SDRAWKCAB 04-12-2007 08:07 PM

Re: Anybody had any positive experiences with some cheap e-bay turbos?

so 10 w40 is better for a turbo then 10 w30
I thought the thicker oil create greater oil pressure?
I know it has a better heat break down capasity but it slows the rotating mass right?
just wondering

BLAAST 04-12-2007 08:16 PM

Re: Anybody had any positive experiences with some cheap e-bay turbos?

The first number is not very important as far as the turbo is concerned because the turbo quickly gets HOT and the viscosity at HIGH temperature is what you have to look for.
10-30 getts runny like water within the turbo. It breaks down quicker but most importantly, it doesn'T lubricate much, cooks into a harmfull crust inside the turbo and on the shaft and is more prone to leak out. And then, you return that soup to your engine..... And it stinks wheni rebuild your turbo. :6
5-50 is the best. it remains more viscous at higher temperatures, therfore maintains a good cooling and lubrication efficiency, slows down wear, and lasts longer.
not sure but i think 5-50 is available only in syntetic verson.

lol its kinda hard to ---- up a fmic its good as long as there arent any holes in it

Re: Anybody had any positive experiences with some cheap e-bay turbos?

i have here at my shop a pile of 5 chinese intercoolers of different sizes and "brands" with some the passes that have blown out. Some people have tried to temporarily fix the problem with epoxy glue (pretty). PAsses are just brazed together, which should normally be ok but apparently, chinese fabrication processes and quality control is as leaky as their intercoolers.
