Default Another turbo help question...

Alright, let me please tell you what I have, and then maybe someone can help me out. I have just recently aquired a 1989 Honda CRX Si, with an already existing D16Z6 swap and GRreddy turbo kit I assumed designed for that motor (92-95 Civic). Unfortunately whoever had done the work left it a bit unfinished as it's still using the OBD0 wire configuration and an OBD0 distributor , and of course, no vtec connected the correct way. I do plan on rewiring for OBD1 soon, as I have a new ECU and am looking for an inexpensive harness converter. JDMshit has one for $110 shipped I may get.

I am only slightly familiar with turbo cars, as in having them in the past and having someone else look at them, but the pocketbook is very small and I am rapidly learning the nature of the beast and have been performing my own work on NA setups, but wanna get familiar with forced indution 1st hand.

My dilemma:

When I 1st aquired the car, it ran great. Gated at around 8psi and seemed to hold up well. However, recently it's been acting a little strange, well, downright annoying. In the past, when I would mash the accelerator down, I'd have instant gratification starting in a low RPM range, hearing the familiar spooling and the burst of power, and the awesome "psssssht" of the BOV on accelerator let-up. Well, now, more recently, it's a HUGE change, instead of launching forward as I step on the gas, I hear the spooling of the turbo, but instead of the launch forward I come to love, it feels like a huge hesitation. Almost a pulling sensation until it reaches a high RPM, then with a whipping of the head back it finally bursts into power.

Ok, now, what's wrong? Why the hesitation? People suggest whether it may be filthy injectors, a boost leak, or maybe the timing's slipped? I'm not sure. Perhaps someone has some suggestions? Please, ask any questions that may help? Regarding boost leak issues, I've checked all connections to make sure they're tight, and they are (fitting around all joints and sections). Should I check anything else?

Help?

ur wastegate... is it internal or external? try this BUTTTTTTTT BE CAREFULL!!!!!

take the vaccume line off the wastegate and try to boost JUST A LITTLE!!!!! jus see if its hessitating still... make sure the wastegate arm is in the closed position. mine used to do that... lag like a bitch then boom i get my boost feeling. its due to the arm being in the open position then when it seems boost it closes it then opens at the set psi? kinda hard to explain but try makin sure its closed all the way if it is then ur wastegate might be opening early as hell slowly closing? hard to underastand. jus check that out.

Well, about turbo lag, I fixed that issue when I got the car, since they didn't have the BOV vacuum line connected. The moment I got the car into my possession, I tapped into the brake booster line, that's been working like a charm.

So since then, I've had no turbo lag issues what-so-ever.

Now as for the wastegate, I will try that issue that you suggested turboDA6, it is an internal wastegate. I appreciate the help. If I AM having this issue, how do I fix it, or rather, how did you fix it? Would it help anyone's brain if I said that if I slowly accelerated instead of mashing it down, that I wouldn't get that hesitation as bad, or at least enough to notice a lot? Still there until I hit a certain RPM then a surge of power...

Another quick question. Is it normal for a turbo not to boost much when at a standstill and just revving it up, until I am in the forward motion?

Yes it's normal, it will only build boost when your engine is under load ie, when you are driving.

Strangely enough, this is the 1st time this has started happening in the 2 months that I've had the car in my possession (even tho the car wasn't officially mine until just recently), and I know the TPS was snapped off like a twig from the TB the entire time I've been driving it. The only thing it seems I can do is replace the entire TB since it seems the TPS is attached in a way where removal would be hard to do. Fortunately I have another complete TB sitting around. I'll just unbolt the old one and slap on the complete one.

But since this dilemma started happening more recently, and the TPS has been broken off far before then, any other possible ideas? Or would that TPS being broke off develope an issue in time?

As for the clutch, I haven't done anything to it. And I know it's not the clutch slipping or anything...
