Default for all you 420A eclipse owners

i'm helping a friend piece together a kit for his 420A eclipse, he asked me why not just buy a kit? well the only kit thats inexpensive is the HRC stage 1 kit and it cost $2,200, so heres a list i whipped together to show him why he shouldnt buy a kit, he should do it hmt style. this list is just something i threw together and its not for sure how were gonna do it, but it would work pretty well, and the prices on piping work are for having a local exhaust shop do all the work, compare my kit to the HRC stage 1 kit...
my kit...
HRC "style" manifold $200- ebay
new 16G mitsu turbo-$500-all over the web
JRC fmic - $200
HRC oil line kit-$100
D.P. flange- $20- bmcrace.com
turbo xs bov-$125- ebay...thats the one he wants
D.P.- $75
2 1/2" cat- $100- all over the net
full cat back exhaust-$100
charge pipes- $150
dual gauge pod-$50
boost gauge-$50
a/f gauge-$60
missing link-$50
walbro 255 fuel pump- $100
vortech 12:1 fmu-$125
couplers/clamps/hoses/gaskets- $60-$70
for a grand total right around $2,000

now the HRC stage 1 kit-
same manifold
same turbo
D.P.
charge pipes
same fuel pump
same fmu
same missing link
all necessary clamps/couplers/hoses/gaskets
$2,200
thats with no intercooler, no gauges or gauge pod, no cat or full exhaust, and no BOV, this is why you dont buy a damn kit, and i hope to go with the afc hack with 450's on his set up rather than missing link/ fmu, maybe this was some help to at least one 420A eclipse owner that wants to boost his car....

Your 2K is better than the kit but thats still a lot of $$ for a car that prolly won't put down 200whp. If it were me doing it I'd spend the $$ on a cheap welder rather than paying someone else to do it. Do you have confirmation from an exhaust shop that they will do the work or are you guessing they will? I'm confident you could get that kit down under a 1K.

those are the prices we were qouted by a local exhaust shop that builds pipeing for all kinds of people around here, and yes it would be cheaper to do it on my own, but the ---- they do looks really good, and ---- the fmu, i think the afc hack will do well on this car, but should i put a btm on it? do those things even work?

BTMs work great in linear applications where standalones aren't easily fitted. AFC hacks are non-linear. Your ignition timing is going to be hugely advanced with an AFC hack until the last 2-3 psi limit of the MAP sensor regardless of how you twist the BTM's dial. If it's a MAF car, same principle, but most of those have knock sensors and seem to cope a LOT better with it.

You can save more money than that. Get rid of the FMU, the A/F gauge is only a light show, get a cheaper bov, and just look for better deals. You can easily shave off 100 dollars or more...

i just quickly shaved off like 1000 dollars hah.....find someone that just upgraded thier eclipse turbo...and buy the old one while they are still pumped about getting a new one so theyll sell it real cheap hopefully....lots of kids in my area have like 3 becuase of upgrades and rebuild parts....dont pay 125 dollars for a bov.....dont buy a guage pod..be a little ghetto for a while....dont buy a a/f guage....fine hoses and clamps cheaper than 70 dollars even though that might not be possible for you...we have warehouse sales so its real cheap.....find a friend with a welder......dont have someone else do all the work........maybe im wrong though....

WOW!! Eclipse 420a ---- on HMT. I have two cents...
First, I have seen a dyno from a 5spd RS with I/H/E and a few other mods dynoed at 109hp!!!!! POS
Second I have one I have wanting to go turbo but I do not think the car is worth the trouble. Not saying it can’t be done.

FROM A NEWBIE- I have already turbo'd my 420a. It cost about 1300 finished with new turbo, FMI, chrome charge pipes, oil lines and misc hoses, gauges, mani etc. This was my first turbo project so I did spend more than I wanted on a couple items, but I would second the "shop around" idea. Unless you are rebuilding the motor (or plan to I would use a smaller turbo. The stock internals are ok with 7psi, but when you get much higher you will need new rods pistons and then look at fuel management.
