Here's a tip for your coupler problem...go to Napa and ask for the appropriate size hose that's used for large trucks and stuff. I used to use that stuff all the time, it's black 3 ply with an extra cloth layer wrapped around the outside. Use them instead of the cheap couplers you've got and make them at least 4" long for each pipe. I've run them up over 25psi before with no problems but it's a little pricey, something like $8-10 a foot. Or try spraying hair spray around the edges of the pipes...sounds pretty gay but it works!
