I took apart my friends turbo he picked up today and clayed the VGT opening when I closed it all the way. I definitely found out why it spools so quick and muffles the exhaust so much. It closes down all the way to around 3.5cm^2 nozzle area. So variable from 3.5cm^2 all the way to 25cm^2

Here is a picture of how tight it gets. You can see how thin the clay is. Its somewhere between 1.4-1.8mm gap.

have you figured out how to remove the silencer on this turbo? I can't find a snap ring on it like the hx35

It requires drilling/ punching out the pins in the outside of the inlet. Cummins guys say NOT to do it on these turbos though. Supposed to hurt spool/efficiency, not quite as easy to put back as the older holset silencers either since its not a snap ring.

So it sounds like I have spun a rod bearing so testing is going to come to a knocking halt.
I need to check and see if the machine shop used the wrong bearings for the eagle rods, they are supposed to be used with 6 bolt red bearings even though they are 7 bolt rods. They have a wider tab on them. I told them at least 8 times, so we will see. Maybe I fucked something up. Who knows. It still has good oil pressure. :l
It will probably be at least a few months till I do anything but diagnosis. I can't afford to spend the time or money to do much with school at this time.

Got a flashlight. Lots of metal in the oil and knocking pretty good definitely a bearing. Don't know when I'll have the motivation to tear into it and find out how extensive it is. Back to driving the 75 Mercedes.

I've seen Mitsufeces bearings put in backwards more than once. The bearing half with the oil groove is supposed to go up.

Post pics of the teardown please.
