'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

Hey Guys...

I just wanted to share my D16Z6 story with you...
It all started out about a month ago, when I've found this site... I've decided to turbocharge my Si using an IHI RHB5. It took me a while to get all of the parts (flages, pipes, manifold, etc...), but I've finally collected them all, and I've decided to finish off this project last weekend. Aha, in the meantime, I've completely rebuilt my D16Z6 with new pistons, rods, turbo-spec camshaft, ground valves, new Exedy clutch, and other goodies... I've finished putting the car together after the rebuild about two weeks ago, and I've driven it w/out the turbo for a week... Everything was beautiful, and the car seemed way faster than before the rebuild, but something was still missing.. the TURBO ! ;D
That last thing was supposed to be put on my car this weekend, with all of the pipes, manifold, BOV, flange welded and all of the parts ready for Saturday...
So I took the car apart again (only a week after finishing the rebuild, put in an AEM cam gear for the infamous "retardation effect" loved by the turbo, and installed the intercooler and pipes. I've finished putting everything in, including the IHI Turbo in less than 4 hours, and the final moment was approaching fast...
We've started up the car with the Turbo in, and carefully watching the Fuel Pressure gauge, and the FMU, not suspecting that anything could be wrong with the IHI RHB5... and right from the moment we started up the car, something was fishy... There was white smoke coming out of the tail pipe... More and more was coming out, until it finally filled my entire garage... Then oil started dripping on the floor.. At that moment we all knew it ! THE TURBO IS F U C K E D...
The oil seals in the IHI must be totally blown, 'cause it's leaking oil into the downpipe like CRAZY. Also, it doesn't seem to give out ANY BOOST, even at high revs. Any suggestions on why it doesn't boost? (The manifold has no leaks, the tubine is spooline, and there are absolutely no leaks on the turbo piping).
Yes, unfortunately I have to get the IHI rebuilt... it kinda sucks, 'cause that'll damage my wallet by more than $400 CAN... Ah well, I'm determined to finish this project.
And here comes the question:
Does anyone know a god turbo rebuilding place in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) in Canada.
Also, how much sould I expect to pay for a complete rebuild of my IHI RHB5 VF28505?
(I believe that it's off a Subaru XT)
Or maybe someone knows where I can get another IHI, 'cause I'd like to finish this project ASAP.
Thanks in advance for all replies,

D16Z6si

Ok..I live in the GTA area as well. Actually. Brampton. I know of a good place in Brampton that specializes in Turbo (Called J&R Turbo).

One thing I must mention is that a turbo will not spool while idling in a garage. The engine must have a load on it to spool the turbo properly. Reving in Neutral will not get u boost.

Anyways, ,give me some more details where you live and I will see what u can do.

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

Where should I look for one...?
As you can see I've had a pretty bad
experience with a eBay IHI :)
Scrapyards are also IFFY...
So what's the best place to get one?

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

you chance it everytime u buy a used turbo.. who knwos if they work or not.

try looking for one in the classifieds here, and on www.honda-tech.com

good luck, dont buy off parts trader either.

How much would it roughly cost to totally rebuild and IHI RHB5? (in $CAN or $US)

shortyz 05-26-2003 01:41 PM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

call this number ask for parts, and tell them u need a rebuild kit for that turbo u got. (Toll free: 800-663-6308)

i can rebuild it for you to if u wanna ship it away, but first find out rebuild kit price, its near me to so no shipping on the rebuild kit.

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

price will be quoted in cdn from them also.

Shortyz, where are you located?
How much would you charge me to
rebuild my turbo?
How long would it take to rebuild it from the moment I shipped it to you?

ahh yes, the risk we take at putting junkyard turbos on our cars... looks like ya got a bad one ;)

poor guy, stuck w/o a car right now. Main reason I am too nervous to do one to my car. Maybe over the winter I will..we'll see.

D16Z6si 05-26-2003 02:19 PM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

What could be wrong with this turbo?
Is it all fucked-up, or is it just a minor thing that's busted?
Come to think of it, it think that the smoke was more like coolant than oil........ Maybe it was just the coolant that was burning, and the leaking oil was just a leaking oil return flange.... Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be busted?

88crxSi 05-26-2003 02:23 PM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

if it was oil it would so smell.. coolant not as bad.

burning coolant looks like the smoke that comes out while your car is cold in the winter. oil is a thin blue smoke.

did u have your exhaust connected? was it coming out of your exhaust? or just the turbo ex outlet?

shortyz 05-26-2003 02:27 PM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

its impossible to have coolant leaking into your exhaust. its a cast housing, not possible.

if the oil is leaking outta the return fix the leak.

its your motor putting coolant in

shortyz 05-26-2003 02:30 PM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

also if its 215 cdn, buy another junker. i would do it if the turbo was worth more but i am being honest here

find another. unless you want me to do the rebuild

up to you. but imo u can find another one for 50$

post a WTB in the classifieds.

D16Z6si 05-26-2003 02:36 PM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

Ok...... it's definitely coolant thats burning then...
It's mostly coming out of the exhaust pipe, but some of it is coming from the downpipe/turbo connection. It doesn't smell bad...
What could be wrong with it?
Could some seal be blown, or WTF???
Could I just try disconnecting the coolant supply lines, and checking what will happen then?
I'll post the pics of how/to what I've connected the coolant supply/return to... maybe that's where I've F%&$ up.

shortyz 05-26-2003 02:42 PM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

mabey u have coolant in the oil holes. take pics ofyour coolant/oil line setup for us

block the coolant off if its fucked up.

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

I'll post the pics as soon as I get home from work...
I don't think that I've messed up the oil/water connections... The water connects to the "banjo lines", right? Maybe I've connected the water-return to the water-supply, and vice-versa.. could this be the -----up?

D16Z6si 05-26-2003 02:50 PM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

And Shortyz.... howe much would you charge me for the rebuild if I buy the parts? (If it's indeed fucked-up).
Where are you located?

shortyz 05-26-2003 02:53 PM

Although I have never seen one of those turbos in person, I always thought the banjo fittings were for the oil lines??? ??? ???

it usually doesn't matter which way you hook up the coolant as long as you have it hooked to the coolant lines of the turbo. there isn't a specific flow on the coolant like the oil. the oil line in will be the smallest of the holes (like a 10mm bolt hole) and the oil drain at the opposite side. coolant probably on the same sides of the turbo next to each other, but not always, but definately larger diameter. if you do have the lines run correctly, don't run it water cooled. just make sure you always let your car idle for a couple of minutes before shutting down.

Yeah, but he said he hooked the water lines to the banjo fittings. Is that right? ???

my turbo the oil feed and water lines are banjo fittings (tdo4L off of '02 wrx). only reason i mentioned it.

why wouldn't you hook up the water lines as well?

scttydb411 05-26-2003 10:17 PM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

i meant that if they are hooked up as well and leaking coolant into the turbo, but not oil to not hook them up. if it's not leaking then definately keep them hooked up, but his leak may be a coolant passage that's causing a leak.

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

thanks for the clarification. I have yet to connect my water lines (bought wrong size hose) so i got a little confused when you said not to hook it up. I was happy that i didn't have to buy new hose, but confused cause I thought i needed to hook it up. anyhow, back to the topic, show us the pics!!!

thanks,
chris

Ok, here are the hookup pics...
I hope that you can tell how I've connected everything.
Does it matter if I hook up the water supply/return correctly? What would happen if I messed them up? Would there be a coolant leak into the downpipe, like in my case, or it wouldn't matter?

http://www.uoguelph.ca/~pcalak/PICS/...HookupIHI3.jpg

I can see the oil dripping right there. On the bottom of the turbo. I can also see it on the piping in another pic.

Might be coming out of the turbo or the feed/return lines.
might need it rebuilt, might need to tighten ---- down ;)

Let me know if u still need some help.

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

So does that mean that it's F%$%^#?
Come to think of it, I've rotated the compressor
housing 180degrees, and maybe I didn't
tighten the compressor housing screws,
and maybe that's why it's leaking?

If that's indeed oil, are the oil seals F@#@#?

88crxSi 05-27-2003 07:44 AM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

that IS oil, its brown. check those bolts, make sure they are tight.

D16Z6si 05-27-2003 07:53 AM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

Ok, so that's one problem...
But how can you explain the coolant
SMOKING out of the exhaust pipe?
(by the way, it's not my engine that's
burning it... it was just rebuilt 2 weeks ago,
and it was running clean before I started
putting in the turbo).

scttydb411 05-27-2003 08:23 AM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

the oil return doesn't look nearly that big. i'm using 1/2" id hose. it's gravity fed so you want the least resistance and a flow that doesn't go down and then have to go back up to drain. check that first.

also the smoke you have may be oil burning/backing up. when i was running too rich and washed my cylinders i had to pour a little oil down each spark plug hole to recoat the cylinder walls with oil. when i cranked it back up it blew white smoke. i was a little surprised not blue, but it definately smelled like burning oil. burning coolant will have a sweet smell. it looks like your return is just restricting the flow to the pan and causing it to back up into the turbo. the seals may be fine, but just can't hold back that much oil and pressure going into the turbo.

good luck.

D16Z6si 05-27-2003 08:35 AM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

Thanks for that suggestion scttydb411...
I will check the oil return line as soon as I can.
Now I remember reading about similar problems
that people had on the forum, when their oil
return lines were pointing down, then up into the
oil pan...
But that white smoke totally doesn't smell like oil...
It's thick and REALLY WHITE.
How likely is it my oil return line that's F$^#ing
things up?

88crxSi 05-27-2003 09:11 AM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

Peter.. I would address the oil problems first. I bet those are whats causing the smoke. Maybe there's so much oil it is looking a little white and thick. But from looking at your smoke filled garage pics I dont think that is coolant.

The oil return IS gravity fed. I see your line goes down then up.

D16Z6si 05-27-2003 09:13 AM

Re:'95 Si D16Z6 Turbo Story G O N E B A D :( (PICS)

I will DEFINITELY check that out...
I H O P E that this is the problem with the setup...
(I have my fingers crossed).

But on the other hand..... would the oil be leaking
SO MUCH if it was just the oil return line problem?
