93 Del Sol, Slow Turbo Build
2 Attachment(s)
I've had my del sol for about 4 months now, and i think its time to get my turbo build started.
Funds arent the best.. so its gonna take me a while to complete it.. Its a 93 Del sol, nothing special yet. :p It has a D16z6 Short ram intake Ugly fenders What i believe to be Sparco Racing NS2 wheels (rep.) Short throw shifter DIY amber corner lights... thats all i can think of right now. Attachment 4931 And this is how she sits as of right now Attachment 4932 My goal is to get ~230HP. On a budget, so i'll try and get whatever i can used. :p But the d16z6 has bad rings, so it smokes a bit at higher RPMS. I was thinking maybe going with Vitaras pistons and Eagle rods. But the local shop quoted me at 900 Dollars to put them in if i took the car, and 500 if i took them the engine. Is it really that hard? Im going to go talk to my dad's friend, (a mechanic) and see if he's done this before. Maybe he can do it for me lol Im trying to get a part list going so i can start collecting turbo parts. Still doing my research on what size turbo i will be needing to achieve my goal. Im thinking about going with a smaller turbo for less lagg. But havent decided on the size yet... Any advice/oppinions/comments are welcome :) |
should be a fun build but please tell me your a girl... :)
|
Ha! no Im a dude.
why lol Right now im sanding down my rims so i can paint them a different color, probably gonna do bronze or gunmetal... havent decided yet. |
sweet car! i like the t-tops on that thing. if your wanting quick spool i would suggest a t25 off of a 2 gen. eclipse gst or gsx. or a 14b turbo off of a 1st gen. you can find them at the junk yard for pretty cheap.
|
Thanks man!
Its definitely a work in progress untill i get it looking the way i want it to lol. METZWRX, i was actually looking at the TD05-16G, but havent found a manifold that would fit, if i went that route i wouuld probably have to get one made, uh? Im gonna search and see how fast turbo spools when using a t25 off a 2nd gen Im hoping at getting full boost no longer than 5kish.. |
you could get a normal t3 manifold and then get an adapter plate to run the 16g.
such as this one: Volvo & Mitsubishi Adapter - T3 Turbo to Stock Manifold - $48.30 : Himni Racing, Turbocharger, Turbo, Garrett, Turbo Kit, GReddy, Mazda RX-7, HKS, Apexi, TiAL, TurboXS, TurboSmart, Flange, Turbonetics, Exhaust, Intercooler, ACT, Intake and im sure there are others that make them as well. btw, with that turbo you should easily see full boost well before 5,000 rpm. that is the nice thing about thoose turbos. they'll spool quickly and still make great power. |
Thanks a lot for the link man! appreciate it.
Never thought about searching for an adapter plate  lol thanks. Yeah thats what i've been told by a few people, little turbo lagg should be fun :) Sounds like i'm ready to start putting a list of parts together. :) I'll post it up once i finish putting it together. BTW is putting in pistons/rings and rods really that complicated? like 500 dollars worth of a job... Haven't asked my mechanic, but he should be able to do it, right? He does a very good job at what he does. |
not a problem man! i was looking for an adapter years ago, so i kinda knew where to look. you get to know your way around when you've had four turbo cars and worked on them "hands-on" yourself!
on the pistons and rods, i would say definately take it to your mechanic. especially if its only costing you $500 dolars. i've heard of plenty of guys having to pay much more than that. |
Dang 4 boosted cars.. haha, boost must be addicting :p
Oh on the rods and stuff, it was another local "speed shop" that quoted me $500 dollars if i took them the engine, and $900 if i took them the car. My dads friend (a mechanic) would charge me way way less than that. I just havent asked him about it. I'll be asking him next time i see em and see if its something he can do. And for the list of parts, this is what i have so far. This will probably change as i go. (specially if i can find used parts locally) Turbo - DSM 16G ~$200 (most likely cheaper lol) Boost Controler - Turbo XS Standard Boost Controller $76.50 Turbo XS Standard Boost Controller - BC-SBC - ClubCivic.com Store - Honda Civic Performance Parts Intercooler Kit - Comes with BOV. $219 cxracing.com: Intercooler Piping Kit BOV 88-00 Civic D D16 B16 B18, Tube & Fin Design Blow Off Valve - *intercooler comes with it* Catch Can - Ebay...? ~$30 HIGH QUALLITY UNIVERSAL ALUMINUM OIL CATCH CAN TANK JDM - eBay (item 320633965852 end time Dec-29-10 13:34:15 PST) Fuel Pump - 255 LPH Walbro Pump $99 http://www.phearable.net/shoppingcar...pump-p-50.html Fuel Injectors - Precision 440cc Injectors $219 http://www.phearable.net/shoppingcar...ated-p-41.html Oil Feed Lines - Vibrant Universal Oil Feed Kit 3 feet, 4 AN male fittings? Boost Gage - Oil Pressure Gage - A/F Gage - What you guys think about this set up? What should i change? :) |
Dont forget to get hondata or whatever chip you choose for ecu tuning, ARP head bolts. Everything depends on if you are building for track time or daily driver. Good luck you have a good list going so far.
|
Oh yeah ARP head studs. Forgot about that. thankss.
Yeah tunning is something I'll be asking about when i go talk to the tunner next week. I believe he told me he would be using hondata a few weeks ago when i asked, but i just wanna clarify. BTW what stage clutch do you guys recommend? |
It really depends on what the car is used for ex auto cross or dd.
|
Probably gonna be more of a DD for now.
You guys think a stage 2 Comp clutch would be good enough? |
Some one locally is selling a Turbo 16g sized internal gated. Greddy cast Manifold. The turbo is a 16g with t3 flangeDownpipe.for 350 dollars. you guys think i should go for it?

|
Yeah he just got back to me about some specs of the turbo.
Its a Greddy TD05H-16G. Specs are here Turbo Size Comparison Gonna go take a look at it on monday and see if it needs a rebuild or not. It should be able to get me to over 250hp with little lag, shouldnt it? |
Should get you there. It all depends on the mods you do and proper tuning.
|
Talked to a local shop today that I get my parts from about the clutch. They said with 200hp you could do the stage 2 but if you plan to push more than that in the future spend the additional money now and get the 6 puck from comp clutch.
|
^sweet! thanks for the info man!
|
^ yes deffinately go with engine management. (chip, tune, etc). and you seem un-sure if you should get a clutch or not. i would say go for it. on my S2000 it started slipping bad at 5 psi on my stocker and i didnt have it on for very long either. i've had good luck with stage 2 exedy clutches. had them in my subaru's and love the pedal feel once it's broken in.
|
Im definitely gonna upgrade my clutch =]
just not sure on what stage to go with. I mean i wanna be able to drive in the street, you know? Dont wanna go too stiff but not too soft either lol There's a guy selling a Evo III 16G for $300 and he also has a 14B for $200. I think im gonna get everything else and then get manifold and turbo last. i will probably start ordering parts next week, I get all my leftover scholarship money then =] should be fun! |
Go for the 16g the 14B is smaller if you have future build improvements you will want the 16g. Stay away from ACT clutchs, the guys at the shop said they are crap. You can drive on the street with a six puck I do with my daily driver. Good luck with the build.
|
sorry i posted on one of your 1st page posts! ha. so it probabley didnt make sense. but sounds like you got everything figured out on the build! good luck.

Hey guys, havent updated in a while because i've been on the search for turbo parts all over the place lol
Someone is offering me: HHKS SSQV Intercooler & piping Injectors Greddy 15g turbo, greddy log mani, and Greddy down pipe All for $550. he says there is no shaft play on turbo. What you guys think? should i go for it? Im really thinking about it...lol ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. :) Attachment 4788 Attachment 4789 Attachment 4790 Attachment 4791 |
Sounds like a deal. Make sure to check turbo yourself for shaft play and visual signs of oil leaks ckeck manifold as well and make sure there is no cracks in it. Also check intercooler for dents and holes. Go from there and make a deal if you can for a lower price it never hurts to ask. Not sure about a 15g so it may be a little small like 14g, but will spool quickly.
|
Thanks for the input G_DOGG, Yeah i wish it was local. its actually from a forum, he has good reputation on there and people vouch for him. But i just dont know..lol
But it seems like a pretty good deal to me |
Go with what your gut is telling you or ask for more up close photos to help you make up your mind.

So i ended up with going with this turbo, manifold, downpipe, and intercooler.
Found it from a local guy. Attachment 4758 dont have pics of the rest of the stuff but i'll post it all soon lol |
What you guys think? it has no shaft play what so ever. no in or out movement. got it for 300 bucks for all 4 pieces.
|
How big is the turbo. I see its a turbo td04. Look forward to seeing what else you got. Looks like you save some dough and didn't have to pay shipping or wait to get the items.
|
Yeah sounds like i came up with a pretty good deal.
I had the local tunner shop take a look at it after i bought it to make sure i didnt overlook anything. They said it looked in very good shape. The seller claimed it had just hit 10k but who knows lol Its a Greddy 15g. Its small. but should definitely be fun |
The turbo is small, but will spool up quickly which is good with smaller engines. Have fun with your build.
|
Thanks man!
|
Not a problem.
|
Hey man I also have a Sol thats turboed. I have the z6 I was runnin a DSM t25 at 10 psi. It spooled like crazy was at full boost by 3000rpm. I was on 10psi. The tune i had was from a guy that dynoed 235whp with same mods and specs. It was fun while it lasted. My motor already had 250k before I turboed it so I knew it would blow. I chipped my ecu and am runnin crome.
|
Running a Boosted del sol myself...

Looks like you have got a nice project started... Good Luck with the build!
|
Thanks man! Nice sol!
So i think i have everything EXCEPT for injectors. Im thinking of going with DSM 450's. But i have a few questions.. Eclipses, talons, lasers from 1989+ have 450's. Correct? OR Do only the ones that come turboed? Or do both the turbo'd and N/A versions of those cars come with them? Thanks! |
Just the turbo cars have the 450's... You will need a resistor box or to solder individual resistors inline with each injector when you are using the DSM's because they are Low impedance injectors... I got lucky and found some tuner toys 550cc hi-impedance injectors on ebay for $80 shipped... They were brand new never used in the original package... The problem with DSM injectors is that they are used and don't always flow like they should... that being said, you run the risk of leaning out a cylinder because of a bad injector... Its worth the $$$ to get rebuilt or new injectors... Just a peace of mind thing...
|
Looks like a good build so far... the 15G looks to be a good match for the power your looking to make with the d16 for a good street setup.
|
There was a set on dsmtuners that the guy had sent off to a injectors company and cleaned and flow tested(can't mem which company) and didnt even install them when they got back. He was askin around 80 or 100 for them.
Also just a bit of additional info. On the DSM 450s the blue tops (1g) they actually flow like 430 and the black top(2g) actually flow like 460-470cc. These are both low impedance. The 420a and the 4g64 sohc both run 275cc and dont use a resistor box like the turbo cars. They are high impedance injectors. The 1g turbo with the 4g63 and a auto use 390cc low impedance. Last but not least the Evo 3 uses 510cc low impedance (what I'm runnin) and the Evo 8&9(maybe more) use either 550cc or 560cc low impedance. If you have any questions about other injectors I can try and look them up. I was able to find and download a injector flow and application ------ sheet. |
