Default 6th Gen. Accord Owners!!! (98-02) BOOSTING STOCK F23 motor - Guide

Hello all,
I am so glad that I fell into the world of boost recently, and I am now building my first Turbo kit. BUT, I need some guidance from FELLOW 6th gen accord owners...since there really is not Guide for 6th gen accord owners wanting to turbo an F23 motor, while a plethora of info is avail. to 5th gen. accord owners, civics, etc

My ride: 1999 Honda Accord 5spd Sedan - 4cyl F23 motor

My goals:
Spend as LITTLE money as possible to....Attain a 50 - 60hp increase, Daily Driver with Stock F23
motor
(no internal upgrades!)
Spend UNDER $900 - struggling college student!

My Turbo Kit so far: (what i bought thus far...mostly ebayed)

- XS Power T3/T4 (t04e) turbo - .57trim, .63a/r - yeh yeh...i know, this COULD be a lemon turbo
- HKS Jdm style 38mm waste gate w/ flange (ebay)
- Greddy type-s BOV (ebay)
- Manual Boost Controller (ebay)
- 2.5" Intercooler piping kit and 25" x 6" x 3" thick Intercooler (ebay)
- intercooler silicone connectors
- Autometer Oil Pressure and Boost gauge (ebay)
- Pillar 2-gauge Gauge pod (ebay)
- Oil Feed / Return Kit (non-welding kit....tap oil pan kit) (ebay)
- F23 Log-style Turbo Manifold with T3 fitting and wastegate fitting
- Vaccum hoses
- 5-bolt Downpipe Flange
- Going to be making a Downpipe
- Universal AutoTimer / Turbo Timer
- Thermal Heat cloth

Questions....remember, my goals are to make a boosted daily driver with Stock F23 motor

(1)Will the Apex'i SAFC work with OBD II? Do they require a harness? or direct splicing.
(2) How to counteract the o2 sensor on the cat if i chose NOT to go OBD I.
(3) Most recommended and cheapest effective solution for Fuel Mgmt / Engine Mgmt / etc...for those who have successfully boosted their 6th gen accord F23 motors

What kinds of things should future 6th gen F23 owners look out for when boosting their cars?
Tips? Advice? Experiences? Your Turbo setup for Your 6th gen accord?

NOTE: Please post replies specifically concerning 6th gen. f23 accords...if I wanted to know about 5th gen F22 setups, D-series, B-series, etc. then I wouldn't have to post here since so much info is out there.

Also, please remember that I know the components which are needed to make a turbo kit...since So much info. is already on the forums...BUT, I want advice, tips, info. concerning 6th gen. F23 turbo setups.

THANKS ALL. and Please sticky this if it becomes Informational.

for 7-9psi the stock fuel pump should be fine. Bigger injectors are a MUST. I thought F23 had a resistor box like F22? If not you can just use any resistor box from any accord. Id highly reccomend getting a more aggressive clutch so you dont have to worry about the stock unit. Sounds like you are on the right track but im not really sure about what works in OBD2 accords... Having a turbo timer is not a nessescity though.

Thanks for that VERY informative Reply.

I will be working on a Turbo Guide specifically for 6th gen accord F23 motors, and knowing the fact that the stock fuel pump should suffice is excellent. So is the fact that I won't have to get a resistor box. I will double check my fuel pump lines to confirm.

I will also look into a stage 2 clutch. I just purchased an OEM replacement, but i guess that will not do.

Anyone...Take a hit at these questions please?

(1) Is a Fuel/Air gauge necessary for tuning?
(2) any OBD II woes beyond conversion to OBD I if i decide to chip an OBD I for Fuel Mgmt?
(3) What do I do about the o2 bung on the downpipe and the o2 sensor in the Cat? Any good info about o2 simulators anyone?
(4) Most recommended and cheapest effective solution for Fuel Mgmt / Engine Mgmt / etc...for those who have successfully boosted their 6th gen accord F23 motors

fuel air gauges are useless, you need a wideband a/f meter to gain any sort of useful information, if you run obd1 you should be able to disable and or eliminate the o2 sensors altogether, but going do obd1 conversion makes you not able to get it inspected unless you put the obd2 ecu back in, if youre in an area where they care about stuff like that... Im really not sure what is involved in an obd1 conversion on an F23 but id bet it involves a conversion harness and a civic obd1 chipped ecu at least, possibly distributor wiring also... the less wiring the better lol

Once again,

thanks for the info. It is so nice to be able to get some of these questions out of the way...and my turbokit building project slimmer.

A few more questions.
(1) For you 6th gen. acccord Boosters. What did you guys do for the O2 sensor? What fuel mgmt option did you take?
(2) How to counteract the o2 sensor on the cat if i chose NOT to go OBD I.
(3) Most recommended and cheapest effective solution for Fuel Mgmt / Engine Mgmt / etc...for those who have successfully boosted their 6th gen accord F23 motors

Basically...what would you guys recommend as the BEST and Cheapest Effective Fuel Mgmt solution?

Very nice to see a rare fellow F23 booster.

It has been a while since any posts but I want to know how your kit turned out.

I have a full custom kit that I just finished compiling.
Please reply if this thread is still alive and I'll give more details. I'd also like some advice.

Thanks

Oh okay thanks for that attendance update jagojon3.

I have a 2000 Accord Sedan F23A4 5spd ULEV with stock internals @ 90k miles.
My purpose is to enhance everyday driving with 7psi max of boost while maintaining a healthy and long lasting motor.

Here is the kit I JUST finished buying:
Nissan Garrett T3 50 trim turbo
T3 oil line feed & return kit
Rx-7 Fuel Injectors 550cc + regulator
Obx FMU 10:1
38mm wastegate
Universal blow off valve
27x6x2.5 intercooler
intercooler 2.5 piping kit
a/f & boost gauges
Stainless F23 Turbo Manifold w/ external wastegate
Downpipe +flex
Nology hot wires
Denso iridium plugs
Aem Cam timing gear & pulley kit
Mitsubishi Evo oem muffler

I purchased all of this within the past 2 days. Rushing is always bad, but how can you resist? Hope I did well.
This is my first custom turbo attempt and I hope it goes swiftly while retaining Honda's world class reliability.

There is a lot of controversy in online forums regarding inexpensive fuel management vs reliability. Many moderators out there are strict when it comes to engine management...strongly advising to go AEM or Hondata + professional dyno tuning. I can't afford any of that.. There are also many people that say FMU's will do the job on low boost setups like mine. Please help clear up any misunderstandings with all this. I don't want to waste anymore money on unecessary crap.

Here are my current questions:
What is the safest and most inexpensive method towards fuel management?
How do you avoid a check engine light?
Is there anything else that is NECESSARY in addition to my list above?
Are there any common issues that arise from garage installation?
What is the best way to self-tune this motor until professional work can be afforded?
Are the Denso Iridium plugs capable of resisting the extra heat?
Will these Rx7 saturated injectors work and fit on this motor and fuel rail?
Do I need to use a different engine oil after installation?
What is necessary to keep a/c?

These are the questions I thought of so far, but if you have ANY additional information or experience to share..it will be greatly appreciated even if it is not on the list.

To tell you guys the truth...i'm pretty scared about this project. If i blow this motor, there is no back-up plan, help or money. Please help me out in anyway possible. Keep in mind that this is a budget turbo that will be driven daily in LA. My original budget was 700, but it has grown to over a grand. I hope you guys have good stuff for me .

Thanks
-James
