Default .42/.48 turbo of a volvo 740

did a quick search but couldnt really find what im looking for. i need to know if anyone is using this turbo on a stock b18b and if i can remove the internal wastegate? will it pull hard until 7000rpm? or die off. im looking to make 220-230whp at 12psi

thanks

if you remove the internal gate you'll need a dp flange that blocks it off and you'll need to run an external gate. 12psi on an ls motor should get you to your goals if it's tuned pretty good. the .42/.48 t3 is a little bit small for the ls motor, but for lower boost it will be good. I don't have the compressor maps, but I'm thinking that on the ls motor the efficiency starts to drop off around 12psi with the .42/.48

anyone else know if it will drop off at around 12psi at 6800rpm? can i still use the downpipe flange from the turbo by taking out the wastegate?

If you want to remove the wastegate and use the same assembly just remove the flaper as well(just the inside).

It sounds like your a little confused on PSI and CFM.That turbo will hold 12psi till redline on that engine like kyle said, but it wont flow the cfm needed up top on a 1.8l to be efficient. All it will do at high rpm is just blow hot air.

Use it if its all you got.Youll have allmost instant boost and no traction....that ciuld be verry, verry fun

yeah i understand, i guess i just didnt know how to ask the question. but it wont hold 12psi at 7000rpm. my boost will drop off a psi or two if my turbo is to small because its not going to flow that much air. i found out what i needed. the flange off volvos is the 4 bolt t3 but its kind of got a round flange and its hard to seal because of a groove. so im going to look for something bigger with a proper seal. what cars does the t3 super 60 come off of? i also want the compressor to have a flange so i can mount my cone air filter. so far the t-bird, pre 90 300zx, SVO, and dodge daytona, and some other chryslers. thanks guys!

yeah its a bit small for that motor. wont flow the air up top, but it will spin up fast.

its like a car im been tuning a little for a local guy, gsr motor with a tiny td04h-13c from an auto dsm, wonders why its slow....der.

The volvo T3 compressor is a 50 trim 0.42 a/r. It's good for 150HP max.

The 0.48 turbine is able of 200+ WHP but the compressor needs to be upgraded. Either with a t3 60 or a small T4 compressor.

150hp max??

I know of several people using the .42/.48 getting more than 150hp for sure. Those are like the standby turbos for dseries guys making close to or a bit more than 200.

so i made the bad choice of using a .42 .48 on my b16, but i've had a couple ideas. would porting out the inlet on the turbine side, and upgrading the compressor to a 60 trim help me out at all w/ my tiny *** power band?
