240sx Turbo project list and prices

I've priced things out and here's the things I will/have bought and the prices I expect to pay or have paid:

Custom Manifold (www.jgstools.com/turbo) - $150
WRX Turbo - $90
SR20DET Injectors - $70
Turbo XS MBC - FREE (friend loner)
Turbo XS BOV - $90 (don't need it but more of a WANT)
A/F and Boost Gauge - $60 total
Apexi AFC - $50 (old ass one)
Mitsubishi Sidemount IC - $50
Oil lines - $30
Vacuum lines - $15
Downpipe - ??? Have some parts already from friend, the rest I'll have to get

So that's $605 plus downpipe costs. I might have to do with a DSM BOV afterall to keep costs around $500.

Otherwise, what do you guys think?

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

I would highly recommend the DSM 1g BOV. This is what I used and it worked well on MAF cars because you have to recirculate excess air back into the intake stream. Also keep an eye out for your fuel pressure, you may need to upgrade your fuel pump. Some good choices are the pumps from the 300zxTT, infiniti Q45, or the SR20DET

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

That's a good point. But I want that loud BOV noise! :P I was doing some thinking. I've heard from nissan people that some people actually place the MAF sensor AFTER the turbo in the middle of the charge pipe (most likely after the IC to avoid damaging the MAF from the hot air going through). So if that was the case, I could place the BOV (non-recirculating one) before the IC and still dump it out to atmosphere right? Do you think that sounds logical?

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

yes that is correct, its called a "blow-through" Maf set-up. Some of the 3S ( stealth/3000GT TT ) guys are starting to do it using the Maf off of the Z06 corvette. I know the GM Maf can handle the presure and temps without a problem, but I'm not sure about the nissan ones.. Either way your "figuring" is correct.

Placing the maf closer to the TB with also eliminate any false readings caused by IC piping leaks.

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

I also meat to meantion that the WRX TD04l-13T is going to be too small... The 2.4L just can't breath through that little turbine side..

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

Thanks for the info 89dxhunchback. So with this blow-through setup, do people use non-recirculating BOVs and just vent to atmosphere?

The turbo I have is TD04L-13G and according to the WRX guys on a 2.0L engine, it's good to about 14.7psi. So why wouldn't this work for me if I only plan on boosting around 7psi?

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

you need charge pipes too

junk240sx 01-27-2004 08:32 PM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

That reminds me...what's the cheapest method to make charge pipes? What do the most 'ghetto' people use? :P

duct tape and vacuum cleaner hose ;)

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

the turbo may be good for 14.7 psi on a 2.0 engine with different flow than your engine, but yours may require a bigger turbo. look for compressor maps on the turbo and for a flow rate on your engine. I hope that 14.7 psi isn't on the absolute scale, it if is that turbo will give you 0 psi on the boost gauge.

junk240sx 01-27-2004 11:57 PM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

Yea, I have the compressor map for the turbo but I can't find any flow rates for my engine. Do you know where you could find such things for specific cars? Like say, '91 Nissan 240sx? :P

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

use piping from a starion or and eclipse, even a turbo probe has some decent pipes..... ;D

89dxhunchback 01-28-2004 01:26 AM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

I used a mix of PVC and volvo IC piping.

Its not the WRX's compressor side that I think is too small for 7psi on a 2.4L its the exhuast side.

Yes, they vent the BOVs into atmosphere without any problems.

The debate as to the type of the compressor wheel on the WRX is "on going".

The "T" type wheel that the WRX uses has better response, than a "G" wheel and a different number of fins. I guess everyone just assumed it was a 13G when they saw the size of it.

I'm hopefully going to be doing a SR20DET swap into a guy I work withs 240sx. I want a SR20 powered 240, but I'm going to have to wait since I have too many cars as it is..

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

A DSM 1G BOV that is released into the atmosphere is pretty loud as is. If its not loud enough you can do what my friend did and stick it to the funnel of a bike horn.

Jakal 01-29-2004 05:31 AM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

bike horn funnel??? LMAO now why didnt i think of that?

Jakal 01-29-2004 05:32 AM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

^ duct taped i hope... wish u could hook up some pics of that

TurboTibby 01-30-2004 05:10 AM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

Don't worry, I will get some pics once I assemble mine. I am gonna epoxy the funnel from one of my FIAMM dual air horn setup and DSM 1G BOV. I dunno which one to use, the shorter one or the longer one... lol. ---- BLITZ, HKS, GREDDY, TURBOXS... my HMT BOV is gonna have a Lamborghini horn stuck to the end of it... :P

Jakal 01-30-2004 02:01 PM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

Sweeet! but rnt u scared that its gopnna end up sounding less like *pshhhhh* and more like *awooooooooooga* i mean wouldnt that be a side effect of the airhorn?

one hell of a race 1st <rev> AWOOOOGA 2nd <rev> AWOOOOOGA scare the hell outta whoevers running beside u:D

Hahaha, or more like "APSHOOOOOOGWAAAAAAAAA!" :P that would be awesome to hear. j/k

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

Sweet setup! Looks good. Dont get a turbo that's too small either. When the power dies off up top, you're going to hate it. Also, why not a FMIC instead of the side mount?

There was also a guy on HT.com who put a duck caller on his BOV. He's got a vid of it to. It sounds pretty damn funny :)

junk240sx 01-30-2004 02:45 PM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

Well, the turbo is small but it's still above 60% efficiency on the turbo so it won't be too horrible at 8psi. I could turn up boost to make it more fun and fit in the graph better but hey, my car culdn't handle that. :P

why not FMIC? :P maybe the cost? $45 shipped for a sidemount compared to $2-300 for front mount...

89dxhunchback 01-30-2004 03:08 PM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

I got my starion off the DSM trader for $100 shipped... FM starion IC sounds better than a side mount DSM one...

Again its not the compressor that I think is too small on the wrx turbo, its the exhuast side, its too restrictive... I've seen 15+ psi on my 1.6L, so i'm sure it can make 7-8psi on your 2.4L, its the fact that the turbine/exhuast side is on the small side for my 1.6L..

I understand that funds is an issue and all, look at my set-up, its no perfect deal, just letting you know....

Anyone know of a direct replacement to the WRX exhuast housing that is bigger ???

junk240sx 01-30-2004 03:46 PM

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

Hmm...if it's too small for your 1.6L, how could a 2.0 WRX possibly use such a small exhaust opening? It IS small but I figured if a WRX can flow fine through it, my 2.4 might not be best but should still work. :-\ i guess we'll see.

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

It's not a matter of how fast it is...it's a matter of having fun ;)

Also, JCwhitney is good for IC piping.

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

9/10 factory turbo cars have torque in mind, not peak power and racing...

Ask any GS-T owner if a T-25 is "good enough" for a 2.0L DOHC... The T-25 is about the same size as the TD04L ( maybe a bit bigger, maybe a bit smaller, I have both but its hard tell with one on my car... )

Ask any stealth/3000gt VR4 owner if a TD04 on a 1.5L kicks ass... He'll laugh and say " are you kinding me ?"... ( twin turbo, one TD04 per 1.5L ).

Any 2.0L automatic GS-Ts singing the graces of the TD04-13 ?? Hell no...

I'm not saying it wouldn't work ( it will be a fun mofo for driving eveyday, but your going to get tired of lossing so much power "uptop"...

A GI-NORMUS exhuast may help, but its just like sticking a tampond in the hole in the boat, its not "idea", but it will work.

BTW I've been told that the KA properly built can be about as good as an SR20 ( but that's a totally different thread ).

It'll be a good "drifting" turbo for sure !!!

( 2.4L neon SRT comes with a TD05H-big-16G ) The evo8 = TD05H-big-16G, and WRX STi = VF 4987346592zkgvhkha or something like that...

all 3 engines have a MUCH MUCH LARGER turbo on "factory cars" that are very "torque minded"...

Sorry if I'm making you second guess it, but it WILL WORK and your car is going to be light-years faster, its just not "idea"...

Re:240sx Turbo project list and prices

89dxhunchback> no no, i totally understand what you're saying. I didn't mean to diss your advice in any way neither. I appreciate all the input.

Out of curiosity though, what kind of 'top end' do you ahve in mind? I believe the KA engine's power peak is around 5600rpm so it's not really a high reving engine anyway.

But yes, I know it'll be fun and as embarrasing as it is to admit, more than power, I just can't wait to hear the BOV sound. :P PSHHHHHHHHHHHH
