December 6th, pulled the front end off to swap over painted hood, bumber and fenders. Ghetto, but on its way.

Then after dinner I went back in and installed the pre-painted hood, fenders and bumper.

It lives! Starts and idles fine and dandy. Tad loud with just the downpipe though. Camera went home without me, so will have to wait for more finished photos. I am trying to make this wagon CLEAN, compared to the Reddevil....

Tommorrow I will finish up. Need to get some turbo bracket supports made, get some vacumn line T's, get the breather lines plumbed into the turbo inlet, and the fender and bumper back on. I will also be wrapping most of the piping with heat wrap.

Because with a MAF, and a totally custom set up, I would have a BITCH of a time getting the MAF to fit PRE-Turbo, and then I would have to have a recirculating BOV, which I did/do not have in my possesion.

Haha, thanks for the offer, but thankfully can only use16"rims from now one due to bigger brakes!

Yeah, AWD.

Since this is the dailydriver, I REALLY do not want to bust the motor, so I am going to attempt to stay@ 8 psi, which on a Suby motor is only good for about 200-210 whp.... BUT WAY better than it was! The motor itself is good for 400 whp, but that power is all in the tune, of which I am know to suck at. ::)

Awesome work lol. Im in the process of rebuilding an ej22t for my 93 SS legacy i picked up.

reddevil 01-18-2009 11:24 PM

Re: 1990 Legacy build

Put another 40 or so miles on the turbo. Still hasn't failed. ::)

Definitley is slow spooler, although tuning might help some. Gas milage is going to be atrocious for awhile till I get tuned as I a fearful of leaning it out, although 8 psi I could probably run 14-1 and be safe. Full bost of wastegate is 8 psi @ 4250 or so. I can see these turbos being Honda happier than low rpm Subaru happy.

Power delivery is SMOOTH though. Lets say you are in 3rd and 2500 rpm. Mash the gas. Buhhhhhhhhh for a bit (not totally doggy), then Wahhhhhhh, then comes 4250 and WHEEEEEEEE till redline (6500 for me). You definitely get kicked back at 4250, and then the power is totally flat. And in a good way. There is NO drop off all the way to redline, but no huge climb either. Its just like 80 hp was suddenly added across the board.

So I am damn happy so far. Obviously not a monster, but until I can get it tuned (and install larger injectors! just running 440cc for now), I can bomb around to my hearts content.

I will install larger injectors and turn the boost up some when I have the spare money to do a dyno tune..... My plan is about 225-250 @ the wheels on a Dyno Dynamics dyno, 12 psi?

you ever consider swapping to 02-05 wrx wiring and ecu?

reddevil 01-19-2009 12:04 AM

Re: 1990 Legacy build

Yes.

I actually have a 96 or 97 JDM WRX ecu, with most of the wiring harness.... Just a combination of kinda lazy and not sure which vehicle to put it on. The Daily Devil (as it has now been named) was possibly going to get it, but since this setup is pretty damn bulletproof at the lower boost levels, I don't really want to waste the effort/spend the time on this wagon...

:7what are you using to tune right now?
piggy back, afc hack, fmu. or some other kind of mass airflow tuner?
I'd like to know because I have a 93 legacy ss that I was running 16lbs of boost off of the stock turbo through a wrx intercooler. All I had was an msd dis 2 pulling timing.

PerfectPower6 on an NA ecu. The MAF is a JECS NA MAF that has been modded to flow up to about 400 whp before hitting 5 volt.

Re: 1990 Legacy build

Found my boost leak! A T-bolt clamp was 1 size too big... 1 size smaller and all the boost I want!

Finally feels fast and a lot more responsive with leaking out all that air! 12 psi!

How is that clutch holding up? Hows the engagement? Im in need of a clutch for my SS also.

Clutch is working great. Remember I am cable, SS is hydraulic!

Re: 1990 Legacy build

how much loot do you have in that build?

reddevil 02-01-2009 02:06 PM

Re: 1990 Legacy build

Some of the stuff I already had, some I took off of the reddevil, but IF I had to replace it, this is what I would probably pay.

NA block, $150?
Mahle pistons $450 (although I only paid $28 via a raffle!!!!!)
STI rods and crank $150
Bearings $100
FMIC kit came with stainless piping, couplers and BOV $225
Clutch kit $200
Ebay turbo $<200
Oil feed line $35
550cc injectors (free, modded my stock NA ones)
twin turbo heads $250-400
intake manifold (NA) $50
down pipe back Exhaust $150
Up and down pipe $20 materials
Heat wrap $40
Modded MAF $80 (free to me, I am the one that sells them :))
Air filter $50
Greddy Trust MBC $50 (used off ebay)
Gauges $50 (Boost and AFR narrowband)
Misc $150
Perfect Power 6 piggy back $250
Borla Header $250

So at least $3000....

Damn, I DO NOT LIKE adding this ---- up!
