I'd look up the ratios and final drive to see the difference, I mean if you have to make an extra shift that's time lost on average, unless the shorter gears made up for it. With all the torque from that motor I'd keep the gears longer and just aim for more power, I'm sure traction would be a much bigger problem with a shorter ratio transmission.

Ask BigDaddyVtec about H-series transmissions and their inherent robustness. I'm sure he's very well versed in the finer points of that box.
Chances are if it's hard to put it into third then the synchronizer is more than likely worn, you can take it apart and file it back down to shape, but if you have more money than time, go ahead and swap. I hear that transmission case eats ***** anyway.
I don't know if you already are but double clutching helps to alleviate some of the stress put on the front of the synchronizer's teeth.
