10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
Here's what i've collected so far...some of you here are on honda-tech too so if you've already posted there just ignore this thread...unless you have more usefull information to comment/suggest.
http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1494115 Summary: Was boosting 10lbs on my stock B16a2. Two weeks into boost it started smoking horrible when on the throttle at ALL. Puking out out of the downpipe and burning. Any ideas? - spark plugs are fine - pcv system looks ok? |

Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
double check your drain .. or post pics up on here .... might be valve seals too

Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
might it be blowing oil through the seals in the turbo bearing section? hopefully he didnt let the oil coke inside the housing, it might have coked at the oil drain passage causing oil to exit at the next spot, seals. I was told by Garret that a turbocharger only needs a "mist" of oil to be lubricated as so done in their drag car.

Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
to much oil possibly, might need a restrictor. check the oil drain like they said... the little stuff first, ya know?
ringlands, headgasket :-\ |

Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
what turbo? probably oil pressure too high for the seals on it though, my civic reaches upto 75 psi oil pressure on cold starts, maby too much for the turbo
u should post pics though :X :X |
Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
Will post pictures within the next 30 minutes. The car hasnt been boosting either, so i took the IC piping off and the FMIC today to find about 3 quarts INSIDE the intercooler piping........
- changed the oil return today and it's kink free....still smoking horribly - checked spark plugs for detonation...they're fine - im out of ideas..... |

As to why you were able to replace it with a brand new turbo and it still happened is due to the fact that there is OIL in your charge piping, intake manifold, and combustion chamber. No matter how many turbos you swap in, it is going to take a while for all of that ---- to go away without you taking it all apart and CLEANING it before you swap in a different turbo to test it. Have a nice day |
Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
look how low ur return line is...you're suppose to put it as close to the top of the pan as you can so it'll 'drain' into the pan...you have it like at the bottom of the pan where all the oil is at...so instead of the oil draining its building up in the line until the line is completely full then the oil just gets stuck in the turbo...then builds up in the turbo...then when the turbo gets full the oil needs somewhere to go........lol....me< :1

Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
I aree with Darkelvis. There is no other way for oil to get into the cold side piping except from the bearing housing seals...OR if you poured in oil which i know you wouldn't do ;)

Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
raise the oil pan bung and you'll stop going through turbos

Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
alright i guess lesson learned. this was my first turbo build i did by myself so i wasnt aware of every detail. i think what im going to do is slap a header back on it and drive it stock for awhile, sell my manifold and buy a new one, new turbo, and then put it all back together later on down the road. thanks for everybodies help!!!
oh btw...no oil in the intake manifold or anywhere else...nothing really got to the opposite side. |
Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
next time make your return line look like this then youll be fine.

Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
everyone makes mistakes...heres a different example of an oil drain line in my setup
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...drainsetup.jpg im lucky as for me it goes straight down into the top of the engine |
Re: 10lbs too much for stock B16a2?
lol thats definitaly pretty sick....straight down would be lovely!
