Even with gas you'll (myself too) need practice. I Welded a charge pipe with MIG last weekend.
Tested it with water and leaked like a basket! Ground all welds and many small irregularity in weld

Why: I spot welded it all around, eventhough the job looked good (kind of a TIG zipper but less nice), gas protection bubble isn't able to form in such short time event as spot welding (that is if you go too fast like I did).

Advice to myself: don't go too fast spot welding with MIG, let the gas protection bubble have the time to cover the weld. Protection bubble (I don't know the right welding term) is working pretty well though for alonger pass. So for me, until I'll get better at it , it'll be...

Spot weld all round - grinder wheel - full pass
