Welding on a std. manifold?...
Hey kids. I just got my brand spankin new vdo egt. It came with a bung and a rather large diameter probe. I was planning on putting it in one of the runners of my std. mani, but I'm afraid of hindering flow(the probe is that fat). So after figurin' some figures it looks like I'm going to drill out the o2 threads on the manifold and put the bung there.
I plan on heating the stuff with a propane torch and then go at it with my harborfreight arc120 stick box. So what rods and amperage would you kids recommend? |

Re: Welding on a std. manifold?...
You should be fine with some 3/32 NIrod. It might be easier to preheat the badboy in an oven as long as you aren't going to be sleeping on the couch if you do :P
Make sure to let bury the whole thing in sand after it's welded so it cools down slower. Disclaimer. I am a shitty stick welder and I hate NIrod even more than most rods. You're on your own :-\ |
Re: Welding on a std. manifold?...
welding cast is a bitch u gotta heat it up before u weld it and then when ur done u want to bring the temp down slowly to avoid the thing cracking...have fun ;)

Re: Welding on a std. manifold?...
couldnt you just drill it out and rethread it?

Re: Welding on a std. manifold?...
I'd reccomend 3/32" NI99 wire.
Grind the area clean of all rust and other contaminants. You may need to run a first pass without any filler, to help burn out the trash in the cast metal, then go back with filler over the top. I've had good luck with that wire...with no preheat or postheat. Try it without either first. If it cracks, then grind into the weld a bit and go for a preheat the next time. |
