welding cast to steel
ok so I found this out today from my welding instructor
all u need is a stick welder and a hard to find rod that has a nickle content of 55% or more rods cost 71.60 per small box im welding this flange to my turbo http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/3269/dscf0066lz5.jpg |
Re: welding cast to steel
or a mig, or a tig, or a torch.
doesnt really matter all welding works the same way, melts the metal, and mixes a filler in, it has some sort of flux, and once done (correctly) is very strong. btw a large mig will burn that together very nicely, just pre heat and post heat. high nickle filler is only needed when welding cast IRON...... not cast steel |
Re: welding cast to steel
You'd be better off with a tig torch and some ER70S.
If your instructor tells you to weld that with a stick rod, he's a moron. SPatter on the turbine wheel will drastically reduce its lifespan. haha!! |
Re: welding cast to steel
thats y u take it off first :1

Re: welding cast to steel
preheat with a torch, weld with a mig, then dip in a bucket of sand (construction) so it cools down evenly and doesnt crack.

Re: welding cast to steel
can we get some close ups?
looks decent, looks migged, id grind the inside weld smooth, keep turbulance outta the exhaust flow |
Re: welding cast to steel
Looks good, I'm always confused on the welding of "cast" I would imagine the turbine housing is cast steel? I have always had good luck welding them and factory cast turbo manifolds.
Now other things which are much more grainy and brittle I assume are cast iron?? I never have any good luck welding. I have tried it with 70 and 308 and 309 and it always breaks right off below the weld. Later Randy |
Re: welding cast to steel
from what I was told you need a realy soft rod for the cast(porus)material.
the rod used is 55% or grater content of nickle also caled NI rod. welded on a dc stick welder at 70amp amazing weld and very very strong closeup pics tommorw digi batts dead again :3 |
Re: welding cast to steel
Nickel rod is used on cast iron. Cast steel can be welded with ER70S-2 and a TIG.
