welding cast iron
keys to iron success:
- if cracked, drill out the ends of the cracks so they do not continue to run
- preheat the entire piece evenly to 450*F+
- make small stich welds 3/4-1" long
- peen the weld area after each-every few weld beads while very hot to help relieve stress.
- use the correct nickle filler be it stick, gmaw, fcaw or tig. don't weld cat iron with steel filler own up $5 for a single rod or two of the correct stuff. most suppliers will give you a rod or few for afew dollars. (nickle filler is fairly expencive btw)
- do not let the piece cool rapidly. use a welding blanket or a bucket of sand to control the cooling. do not mess with i for 48 hours
drill the crack out bigger for welding a tial flange to.
