Default welding cast iron

the bosses dad asked me to try and repair his MGB manifold and its cast iron (not steel)
any hints tips suggestions??


i know to preheat but any other info

Preheat, weld it hot, then cool it slowly (sand or something) if you can.

keys to iron success:
  • if cracked, drill out the ends of the cracks so they do not continue to run
  • preheat the entire piece evenly to 450*F+
  • make small stich welds 3/4-1" long
  • peen the weld area after each-every few weld beads while very hot to help relieve stress.
  • use the correct nickle filler be it stick, gmaw, fcaw or tig. don't weld cat iron with steel filler own up $5 for a single rod or two of the correct stuff. most suppliers will give you a rod or few for afew dollars. (nickle filler is fairly expencive btw)
  • do not let the piece cool rapidly. use a welding blanket or a bucket of sand to control the cooling. do not mess with i for 48 hours

cast iron relaly isn't hard. it just takes along time to do it right. pre/post heat control, peening, filler. if you take your time youll never have a problem.

drill the crack out bigger for welding a tial flange to.

im a welding noob. what's peening? You mean like hammering. nm, looked it up
