Re: welding cast iron

Preheat, weld it hot, then cool it slowly (sand or something) if you can.

Re: welding cast iron

keys to iron success:
  • if cracked, drill out the ends of the cracks so they do not continue to run
  • preheat the entire piece evenly to 450*F+
  • make small stich welds 3/4-1" long
  • peen the weld area after each-every few weld beads while very hot to help relieve stress.
  • use the correct nickle filler be it stick, gmaw, fcaw or tig. don't weld cat iron with steel filler own up $5 for a single rod or two of the correct stuff. most suppliers will give you a rod or few for afew dollars. (nickle filler is fairly expencive btw)
  • do not let the piece cool rapidly. use a welding blanket or a bucket of sand to control the cooling. do not mess with i for 48 hours

Re: welding cast iron

cast iron relaly isn't hard. it just takes along time to do it right. pre/post heat control, peening, filler. if you take your time youll never have a problem.

drill the crack out bigger for welding a tial flange to.

im a welding noob. what's peening? You mean like hammering. nm, looked it up

FYI
tr.v. peened, peen·ing, peens

Re: welding cast iron

Easy: You braze it instead. O0

Seriously. Not too many scenarios where I would pick welding over brazing for cast iron. Cast steel I would weld, no probs. Cast iron? Why bother?

fluxcore + extra wire fed = cast iron welded and ready for duty

Re: welding cast iron

Use the cast iron rod with a stick welder. The high nickel stuff is machinable afterwards, but expensive. Welding cast iron isn't bad at all, really.

Re: welding cast iron

Wellding cast iron is a breeze if done correctly wht the correct procedure and filler.

I find vermiculite amazing for slowly cooling cast iron. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermiculite

It is the white stuff in potting soils and can be bought by the bag at most garden centers.

Dont forget to preheat and peen!!!

Nonsence! Eutectic Castolin makes amazing cast iron and speciality rods that you can even run on a cheap-o 220v AC stick welder, the xuper 2240 is a great cast iron rod.
