I only mentioned a generator since you live in an apartment and most landlords frown upon DIY stuff like wiring. I've just started the project of running 220@30amp to my garage. Pain in the ***, it is.

Generators are good for portable fab also. I've done some welding around the place using my 3000 watt genset with fluxcore.
