Top Mount Manifold AKA the SINKTRAP

After being lazy and seeing hondacivic00's post, here's a manifold MADMAX and I threw together July 2nd. I've been running it, but it will be replaced shortly with a mini-ram.
I'm currenty running 9psi on a A6/Z6 LS/Vitara setup.
Pros: Cheap and easy to make. Clears P/S and A/C.
Cons: The stock 4-1 header has a choke point 4-5" up. Probably better to chop the mani off and weld a 2.5" jbend to the cast.

Didn't use the 45. The flange was later ported out.

Good work Mike! Living in cali you have to do ---- like this just to live there! You should try the y7 manifold and just cut off the casted on cat or there's another manifold that looks just like it but the cat bolts on. It's like a cast mini ram. You should try giving that one a whirl.

thx. ya, the california cx/vx mani is like the y7 but a 2 piece. I actually have one of those in the garage for smog.

We had to re-tack the DP so many times. It was a really tight fit. Next time we will use the flux-core madness to tack everything up instead of the tig.

I want to go to Fontana this month, but I don't think I will be ready. I am selling the old topmount, IC pipes, and IC and am basically making an entire new setup, but in a different vehicle.

Looks nice!

But you said that it doesn't flow as well as your old HF manifold??

Just another D15B. Everything else will be homemade.

Haha! A single cam in an integra...classic :y Next time try using a z6 manifold also...they're setup like a 4-2-1 and works pretty good for split footprint exhaust housings if you keep both runners seperate up to the flange. That's what I did for my b16 manifold...works great, except mine mounts off to the side where the battery was.

We did that one already. Mike wanted to try another manifold.

First we used the Z6 Manifold. Even better manifold would be the JDM ZC cast manifold. The ports are the size of the b-series.

What is your difference in spool up time?

also the Z6 mani lines up with aftermarket headers also..if you built a HMT top mount like me and madmax did you could use it on a stock Z6 mani and later on upgrade to a aftermarket header :6

what do u do about bracing for these things? won't the turbo, wastegate and all be to much weight for the header?

Turdbo 10-24-2006 03:35 PM

Re: Flatrate Top Mount AKA The SINKTRAP Mani

they dont really need braced but if your using the factory header they have a factory brace on them :y

Tom-Guy 10-24-2006 04:12 PM

Re: Flatrate Top Mount AKA The SINKTRAP Mani

Dynamically unbalanced 4 cyl need anything bolted to the engine braced.

All are braced, except the b-series one. I felt that with the schd 10, it didn't need any bracing.

Re: Top Mount Manifold AKA the SINKTRAP

sweet!!! thats a pretty good way to easily convert to an external wastegate. i bought a rwd sr20 manifold (mine is fwd)... and running in to clearance issues with the lower front tranny mount because of where it directs the turbo.... this might be my answer.

Alright JD, no real difference in spool time. My new setup spooled slightly faster, but that is most likely due to a couple of old cracked leaky couplers on the last setup. Haven't gotten to the dyno yet. My ass says it's faster, but you know how those things are. :P Next it'll go up after I make sure there are no problems. Dyno time is money, not time dicking around.

The sinktrap however does show a slight improvement in spool time compared to a HF, but I think the single tube sinktrap significantely chokes the exhaust flow at higher rpms.

wow those are some damn good manifolds and even the ones made from stock civic manifolds

Re: Top Mount Manifold AKA the SINKTRAP

sorry if i missed this in your post... but what size diameter pipe did you use for the 180 off the manifold? looks like 2" maybe 2.5" ? thanks.

edit: and what gauge pipe is thick enough? do you think a 180 bend in 14 gauge mild steel would work? thanks.

Re: Top Mount Manifold AKA the SINKTRAP

That was done with 16g steel in 2". The stock 4-1 manifold merges down to 1 3/4". I ported it out to match. A 2" T3 transition from racing solutions was used to make it easier.
I would like to try another using 2.25" piping. 14g steel would be better.
A must: Use the factory manifold to block bracket/brace. Also, another brace for any Sinktrap should be added.
