Signed Up For Welding Classes....I Be Fabbin'

Welp, i finally signed up for some welding classes at a local adult night class thing (starts feb 20th). im pretty stoked. ive always been into fabrication and stuff, just never really had too many welding skills. i can mig weld, but only after the settings are adjusted for me, so i have alot to learn but i think i will catch on nicely. i cant wait to be able to TIG! hopefully this will result in me being able to fab up all the ideas in my head, maybe make some money on the side for my supa sweet stuff haha, and get my foot in the door at a good paying job.

i cant wait! just thought id share....i was a machinest for 2 years, thats sweet too, but welding is so much more feasable out of my garage :y

I started mine this semister full time. I mother---------love it! We have a niiiice shop. Just got a $178,000 CNC water jet too! :S
Here you just sorta start at whatever he's rotating the previous students into. So for me it was GMAW & we'll do GTAW later this semister. I've been using a Lincoln 350MP. Seems pretty badass.
Never used a real harcore mig before. Took me 3 days to pass a 2F, and about a day & a half to pass 1F with it.

Working on 3F right now then 4F. Then it's the same stuff all over again in GMAW-P (pulsed). Then we do all that in GTAW...

2nd shift own'd me on taking welding courses. All the classes are in the evening so that rules me out for everything. My wife has a year left then I can quit my shithole job and go back to school for metal fab.

my welding schools kinda ghetto. one carbon arc 4 smaw and 2 hard wire and 2 dual shield flux core. gets reall tuff when16 ppl want to use 9 machines

I wonder what codes you guys have these certs in.

There's not much sense in testing in all the fillet weld positions when you can take one or two and be qualified for them all. The same goes for pipe. Why bother with 2G, and all the others when you can take the 6G and it covers them all?

Also.... what code is it that allows you to take one test and qualify for unlimited diameters (2" and up)?

Engloid - I just do what the ---- I'm told by the guy that teaches the class.
Who is the only person on the planet that has an opinion that matters at the moment, cause his ass is the one that can fail me. hahahahahaha U know how that stuff goes!

Our class is extremely nice. About 30 people, but the shop is huge & loaded with a wide array of equipment.

Be careful....cause a lot of the welding schools make a business out of selling cerrifications that you don't need. Some will want you to PAY for certifications in all positions, when you don't actually need them. They also will want you to PAY for oxy-acetylene certs that will be virtually useless in your future. Not only that, but the certs you get in school are, at best, probably AWS certs. AWS certs are typically not enough to get you a good job anyway. Sure, a few look good on a beginner's resume, but most places (not junkyard jobs) that do work that requires certs other than AWS.

I would reccomend that you ask your teacher what codes that you're welding to. It's all part of learning, so don't think you're going to tick the guy off. You need to know this stuff, even more than you need to know what 6010 stands for. If he tells you it's AWS or ASME, and then wants you to pay for certs in all positions, ask him why you can't just take the 6g pipe that qualifies you for all positions. It's a fair question to ask him.

Re: Signed Up For Welding Classes....I Be Fabbin'

I don't pay anything, the state does. It's not a welding school. It's a state run 2 year community college.

Welding Technology offers a guide to skills and knowledge in the safe operation of the following: oxyacetylene flame cutting; plasma cutting; welding and brazing equipment; electric arc welding equipment for shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, flux-core arc welding, and gas Tungsten arc welding equipment. Safety and performance are foremost and are stressed throughout the program. All position welding is included, with a major emphasis on out-of-position welding and performance testing. Also included in referenced texts as related instruction are electrode classification, chemical and physical structure of metals, joint design, methods of testing, welding procedures, welder qualifications, welding codes and specifications, blueprint reading, and basic layout. Passage of The American Welding Society Test is required for graduation.
I know I paid a pretty penny for several NCCER books. :S

Pipe is 4"+ Dia.
There is I think 5 diffrent AWS certs
G3 - You're certified for flat, horizontal, and vertical you are limited to a shop. You cannot weld at place of final install.
G4 - You're certified for flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead. You can weld at place of final install.
If you test for a G4 you are certified for all positon (FHVO) plate and pipe over 2' dia.
TIG - 1/8" to 3/4" plate groove and fillet welds.
FCAW-S - 1/8" and over plate groove and fillet welds.
FCAW-G - 1/8" and over plate groove and fillet welds.
SMAW - 1/8" and over plater groove and fillet welds.

QC7-93, Standard for AWS Certified Welders
QC7-93, Supplement C, Welder Performance Qualification Sheet Metal Test Requirements
QC7-93, Supplement F, Chemical Plant and Petroleum Refinery Piping
QC7-93, Supplement G, AWS Performance Qualification Test (generic supplement)

'cause I know you're too lazy to google it... Basically. My parents paid afew grand way back in 1990 into the PACT program & once I turned 18 the state pays most of the bills for any type of schooling until I hit 25.
So if I stay where I am for 4 semisters, graduate & take another semister of CNC fab work in the CNC fab shop. It will have actually cost me $25. Minus some book cost...

What you're thinking of is a gay ass Pell Grant. Where you have to be a really god damned broke ass, or coming out of prison to get. Not that it isn't great for some people u know. It gives older & poorer people the ability to atleast go do something if they want.

AWS does not designate where you can weld something. I dunno where your teacher got that.
It's 3G, 4G, etc. That ONLY designates a position, but has nothing to do with where you can perform the weld.
3G test qualifies you for what you posted above.
4G test qualifies you for ONLY flat (1G) and overhead (4G).
Doing both qualifies you for all positions.

nope...see above. The 4G does not qualify you for pipe, in any position, or any size. You have to have BOTH 3G AND 4G to be qualified for pipe 24" and above.

I'm glad you're doing this, and hope things work out well for you, but be careful where you get information. There's a lot of BS floating around. It sounds like you have a good start on a career, but as I said above, don't get too carried away getting certs in school. In the end, it will all come down to your welding ability. Paperwork just helps give you the chance to show what you can do. After a year or two in the field, your certs from school will be worthless to you anyway.

Use google you god damned lazy ass heffer fucker. Don't call me lazy. That's the pot calling the kettle black. Or the ------ calling the white man white in your case.

PACT-A Qualified 529 Prepaid Tuition Plan
Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 authorizes states to create two types of college savings programs – prepaid tuition plans and college savings plans. Alabama was the third state in the nation to implement a prepaid college tuition program when the Prepaid Affordable College Tuition (PACT) Program began operating in March 1990.

PACT is based on a simple concept – pay today for tomorrow’s tuition. The program allows parents and grandparents to purchase a contract to prepay future undergraduate college tuition and qualified fees for a child or loved one. The contract provides payment for 128 semester hours of tuition and 8 semesters of qualified fee payments at any Alabama public college or university. The contract can also be used at private or out-of-state institutions. PACT will pay the average tuition of Alabama’s public four-year institutions to any private or out-of-state institution. To date, the PACT Program has over 54,790 active accounts and has paid out over $249 million in tuition and qualified fee payments to various colleges and universities. This year, over 17,500 students are eligible to use PACT benefits.
You pay into the PACT program years in advance. The money builds interested for the state to use. The state pays you back by paying alot of school costs. It's not taken from anyone dipshit.

Darky go swing yo ass on a rope!

PACT in return pays alot of your ---- down the road for you giving them free use of your money.
