should I grind my wastegate down or buy an elbow?

I contemplating whether or not I should grind down the top of my wastegate so it clears the head.. i'm broke as ---- right now so i'm not trying to buy an elbow if I don't have to.. it clears the hood so that's not an issue.

btw does anyone have a cheap wastegate flange they don't need so I can get the dump tube made?

Re: should I grind my wastegate down or buy an elbow?

what about denting the underside of your hood to clear.

not the top layer but the reinforcement.

i dont know how good the car looks.

could you get away with it probably
would i do it NO
if you do make sure its not where the screw is and run soft spring only

If it was a knockoff I would go ahead and grind it, wouldn't wanna ruin a real TiAl though. Get an adapter.

+1

If you are broke you can't afford another tial wastegate...

Re: should I grind my wastegate down or buy an elbow?

I would get a few wg flanges and gaskets and stack them untill you cleard the head, or get a elbow and fab away.

Re: should I grind my wastegate down or buy an elbow?

send the manifold back to where you got it from and demand one that fits properly... that is bs.

Thats looks like the new style correct? Any change the new tial is larger in diameter on the actuator, And the manifold was designed for the older style?

A drill, a grinder or sawzall or both, a couple chunks of steel bar stock, and a few minutes you'll be able to make that spacer in no time for dirt cheap.

exactly what I planned on doing.. ;D

actually planned on doing 2, one as a spacer and the other as the dump tube flange.. i could care less if it's not exactly the same shape as a wastegate flange

Cant believe nobody thought to bolt the wastegate on the other way :S (joke)
Is there any way you could remove some of the valve cover if need be, or does it hit the head?
O0 Rig it with multiple exhaust gaskets for the temporary?

---- that ----......Grind that bitch and flux core it... At best.... O0

Re: should I grind my wastegate down or buy an elbow?

as said before.........if its a knock off, grind that bitch.

looks like the area that needs removal would fall between bolt holes. just make sure you do this with the diaphram removed or it might melt. and make sure to leave enough sealing area for the diaphram also

Re: should I grind my wastegate down or buy an elbow?

I would have the mating surface on the wastegate machined slightly, so that it angles the wastegate outwards away from the head slightly.
Not ideal but less invasive I think. SHould be pretty cheap, too.

That would change the angle of the threads though.

Re: should I grind my wastegate down or buy an elbow?

Yeah true, in retrospect, you could only do it to the wastegate. You might need to tweak the holes a bit and maybe grind some flat washers to be wedge shaped if it needs more than 5 degrees or so, so the bolt heads sit flat.

Re: should I grind my wastegate down or buy an elbow?

That wastegate looks very fake, I'd grind it to fit.

Scott-EP 09-17-2008 10:13 PM

Re: should I grind my wastegate down or buy an elbow?

i can get you 2 flanges, one with threads and one without for $30. thats cheap nog. you are the guy that keeps asking me about picking up parts right? if not then it will be a little more to ship

Yeah that wastegate is WAY fake. Ive got one sitting on my desk right next to me and the come isnt right at all. Also the real one has a recessed logo. Grind away.

ummm because everything else, other than replacing the ex manifold is just a bandaid fix ?
makes perfect sense to me.

well im sure a month later he got it figured out.

then why would you say get a wastegate that fits?why wouldnt you say a turbo manifold. then again if i used throttle bodies as glasses i would expect to be called retarded

decisions... decisions...
replace a hard to install, hard to fine and expensive manifold OR replace an easy to install, easy to find, not too expensive waste gate

don't take too long... you'll hurt something

lol.. yeah i keep wondering why it's always up top.. I ended up making a 3mm tall spacer from a piece of steel I bought from home depot :l

Yeah cause those chinese cast manifolds are so rare and expensive ::)

As already stated the simple HMT solution is to make something that works with what you have, not waste money buying new parts casue OMG THEY DON'T BOLT TOGETHER STRAIGHT FROM THE BOX!!1!! A simple spacer works fine.

So you 2c is not only late after the fact but it is stupid
