Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
Anyone install a roll cage in an ef hatch? Where should the rear braces go down to?

Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
Before you start asking were the go, try looking into the rule books so your not just installing a roll cage for the ricer effect, but for the saftey.
Also some Q's? What Class and Type of Racing, How Many Point Cage? What speeds/times are you shooting for if drag racing? What harness/ seat setup? The list goes on, can't just toss a cage in and go!!! |

It is for safety, not for riceing. :) I'm thinking point B would be good. http://www.ipixelspot.com/files/6/cagehoop.JPG |
Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
Search HT. There was a post in the Fab Forum about the Jegs Cages and the debate about whether to go to the suspension point or the unibody rail.
Personally when mine goes into my EG it's going to the unibody rail with the required 1/8" mount plate. |

I still cant make up my mind if im going to install a cage in my CRX :l Id deff go with B but mounted back a little further.
Good luck and keep us updated :y |
Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
Definately tie it into the frame rails at point B.
That will increase the over all stiffness of the chassis more than point A. |

http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/7...ondacivtx8.jpg I kinda like how the rear bars are with the cage, as it would be eazy to do and keep the interior :y

Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
The cross brace for the rear suspension run directly between the rear shock towers. Looks like the strongest place to put em. Thanks :)

Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
You aren't supposed to use the back seats if you have a bar are you? Even if it's like an autopower bar you still shouldn't sit back there. So IMO you might as well get rid of the rear seats.
I will eventually buy a Kirk racing roll bar. I like the design, quality, and price. For a bolt-in bar it is pretty nice. |
Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
Weld-in is always better.
I would like to get an S&W or any other weld-in cage, but no one ships to canada with a decent rate, so we are designing and building our own. |
Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
How is the fitment on that rollbar you got from jegs. Cause I am the one that bent that thing, I bend all the rollcages. Please let me know

Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
Yea thats cool, thats what you get when you order the strut kit with the hoop
|
Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
sleeper, you really bend all the Jegs cages? thats badass!

Just about done with the cage install, got about 3 inches of weld left to do but ran out of gas.

Used a piece of 16 gauge aluminum I was using as a heat shield for welding, heating and cutting. http://www.ipixelspot.com/files/6/gaugesb.JPG http://www.ipixelspot.com/files/6/gaugesc.JPG |
Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
looks good. Nice heavy plates on the floor so it doesnt punch through.
|
Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
Yea, 6"x1/8" plates.

Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
The guys that took chassis fab at wyotech said you should have the cage as close to the roof and B pillers as possible. I forgot for what reason but I know it was a safty reason. And the plates you weld them to are for ------ing out the weight for when your car rolls over so it doesn't punch right though the floor. And your welds should be as perfect as you can make them. I didn't take chassis fab but I took collision/refinishing and Street rod. Right at where your welds meet the base metal the metal is very hard and brittle. You have to watch your heat so not to get it too hot and not to cold. If you don't your weld could break off or crack right along the edge. Have fun.

looks good have any pics of your motor/ setup ? how much was the cage ?

Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
What is the exact gap between main hoop and B-pillar? Whip out that tape measure, if you please, I'm very curious. :)

Re: Roll cage 1991 civic hatch
Ohh, that jegs kit looks like it fits pretty well, how much did you have to do to get it to fit like that?
BTW, from what I can figure out, It doesn't really matter if the bars tie into the frame. If you have a side impact bar run right along the floor between the A pillar bar abd B pillar bar, and a cross bar along the floor on the hoop (along with any other needed bars) then the car can deform as much as it wants to. The goal of a cage is to do exactly that, build a cage around the driver/passenger to prevent intrusions. Mounting points have more to do with the side effect of a cage, which is increasing chassis stiffness. I've been working on a design for my car for awhile now. My plan is to have a impact bar about 1" off the floor, plus nascar style side impact protection. My car is being built for NASA/SCCA so my hoop must have a diagonal, and I'll double that into an X. The harness bar will be like yours, but I want to add a bar that will cross the tunnel about 1/2" above it. The A pillar bars will be reinforced to the upper windshield bar and hoop with tube diagonals 8-12" from the intersects. The seat will be mounted to the cage, instead of the floorpan. There will also be a cross bar under the dash, which I'll use to mount my pedals and stering column. The rear braces will be tied into a cross bar between the strut towers, and I may put an X brace in there as well, because I am well under minimum weight spec as is. |
