my first manifold
7 Attachment(s)
well i know its not complete but i think i can finish it is class later tonight. this is my first project tigging and there are 2 bad welds where i got the tip of my tungston broken of in the weld.
Attachment 22135 Attachment 22136 Attachment 22137 Attachment 22138 Attachment 22139 Attachment 22140 and this is going on top, its just a tdo4L Attachment 22141 |
Re: my first manifold
Those flanges... wow.
|
Re: my first manifold
Looks good, 1.25" stuff?
Tig welding the mild L's sucks, no way to get that crap clean. I got some from McMaster once and I would swear they dipped them in green paint like thirty times. Had to use small wire wheels to get the insides of all them, then wiped them down with acetone and my tungsten would still get dirty after about a half circle. Stainless is much easier. |
Re: my first manifold
That looks great!!!

Re: my first manifold
yeah its for a tercel but it is a 1.5L, i have the pistons from the turbo version (4EFTE) and the beefy rods from the high comp version (5EFHE) so this is going to be a 5EFHTE hybrid, and it is going to be controlled with megasquirt 2.2.
and ya like those flanges 1/2'' cold rolled, and i actually drilled the ports out with a 1.25'' bit and like a quart of oil, took like 2 hours. and i did finish it tonght and pretty soon i will start on the downpipe. |
Re: my first manifold

Re: my first manifold
heh I almost said ------y, I never would've though beefy :1
|
Re: my first manifold
well my buddy talked me into getting it ceramic coated, just one ques- say if there were some small ass holes in the mani would the ceramic like fill them in?
i also cut out the bad welds and redid them, i think it is completely airtight but you never know. |
Re: my first manifold
looks like the plasma cutter you used to cut the turbo flange was under powered for that thickness of metal

SWEET :6

Re: my first manifold
Nice! Honestly those welds look real nice for mild steel. how did you get the tungsten stuck in the weld?!?!
|
Re: my first manifold
be welding and accidentally touch the tungsten into the pool and then the pool solidifies and the tip of the tungsten is stuck in there and the only way to get the tungsten out is to snap off the very tip of it.
have you ever TIGed? |
Re: my first manifold
and that's not all, the MFLD stand on its 4r's without even rocking you must be that table maker that's running from the table-nazzis
;D |

Re: my first manifold
Man, that's a pretty sweet DIY.
I'd go over some of the joints a second time, though, they look undercut and need more filler rod. Also, the filler rod would take care of any holes you have in the welds. ;) |
Re: my first manifold
I don't know why people think flanges have to be a perfect mirror of the other side. Its $7 per T3 flange if you find a smoking ebay deal and $25 for the head flange likewise, or for $30 you can have enough raw steel to make 3 of each. I'll be making some real cheap turbo adapters for stock cast headers soon, and plate steel is the easiest/cheapest way possible.
Other than that, the welds look great, as well as the alignment. Excellent work for your first manifold. Many people's 1st wouldn't hold up a carton of fags (tobacco), much less a turbo. |

Re: my first manifold
nice i want to learn to TIG now :y
|
Re: my first manifold
danG your kinda my inspiration for doing this, you do know i have the megasquirt that you built right.
|
Re: my first manifold
oh ----, didn't know where it ended up :>
If I put it together, good luck!!!! j/k lemme know if you need help with anything! |
