My current turbo project.... BMW

Some pics are of the test fit, with incomplete welds. They're in no particular order.

A couple of the welds on the manifold:

Here's the downpipe...with V-bands:
No, I didn't make that ugly weld on the flex pipe.

view of it all in under the hood:

Here it is, all on a head, posing for pictures.

I brought it all home to weld it on my machine, where I'm a bit more equiped for the welding. This view shows the wastegate better, and it merging into the downpipe.

I guess thats the highest welding complement a person can get. I like the HMT "HF manifold approach" ;) Good stuff.

nice and clean

Engloid 02-07-2006 07:58 PM

Re: My current turbo project.... BMW

It was a real bitch getting it all to fit in there. We had to turn the turbo slightly to the side, just to make room for the wastegate to fit in there and still allow even shitty access to the spark plugs.

I think it turned out pretty well. I should get the welding completed tomorrow, and then have it in the car tomorrow night. The car owner will likely put it in, but I will help if I can. It should go in pretty easily.

------- sweet. That is the aspiration of all welders I would imagine.

Re: My current turbo project.... BMW

i like it. it might be higher quality than most hmt kits but you still kept it homemade by using the stock manifold

Engloid 02-07-2006 09:30 PM

Re: My current turbo project.... BMW

That was done for a couple reasons. The stock manifolds have a pretty good design, so flow wasn't a big concern. Also, this eleminates the cost of a large flange to bolt to the head. It also looks pretty appealing, and we all know that is a factor people consider when buying. I will be looking for some tubing in small diameters next time I get into a job like this. The pipe, being a lot thicker, takes a lot longer to prep and weld. Tube is much more workable.

I try to make sure that people don't steal my pics. It also serves as advertisement to put the name and number in there.

Tennessee. If I remember correctly, you're in the north east?
I may be teaching a tig welding class in Chicago sometime this year. It's going to be a 2 day seminar at the Miller training facility. Last time I did one, the enrolling fee was $70/day, and everybody left happy. They typically have all the newest machines up there to play with :y

i'm up here in canada, close to toronto. $70 a day? that is cheap for anyone who enrolls! if i was a little closer, or if you were doing one in detroit i'd probably go! so how did you end up with that gig? i guess the welds speak volumes... if you ever head up my way be sure to let me know!

I've seen similar welding skills before, but that makes them no less impressive.

Good work.

Do keep in mind that it's $70 in US money...which is something like $150 in Canadian money? ;) We had one guy drive something like 1100 miles to get there.

A guy on another forum knows the guys at Miller pretty well, and he set it all up. It works out well. It doesn't make me rich, but I get a nice little vacation out of it, and get to meet a lot of people.

It's a new HF rig that you hook up to the battery of your car and rev the motor to 5000rpm. ;D

You and Me Aaron. Let;s go to Tennesse. My work has a plant down there, so we have an apartment for the boss and other people who go down there to train the new guys. I think it's about 20min from Knoxville.

You guys are ------- nuts!! haha!!!

Even the serious threads here make me laugh!

Thanks for the compliments, guys. I guess we all like to get compliments, and it never gets old. Doing the welding does, but being appreciated for it doesn't. The sad truth is that most employers don't appreciate a good welder anymore.

I'm sure we could run the business, but where would we find the talented welders? ;D

I've not even gotten my overhead JBWeld certification yet.
