modify a camshaft
i like to save a buck as much as the next guy but sometimes i get too gehtto, and i tried a search but no deals with that so i apologise if this has been debated before
ive built myself a t3 kit on a 90 integra 11psi, so everything im saying would relate more or less to what ive built what if you take stock b18a cams and drill and tap holes in the center of the peak of each lobe....thread in a stud with thread lock and have the stud sticking out, round the end and check for peak lift on all lobes with a caliper turbo cam? O0 |
Re: modify a camshaft
haha yeah great ideal, Might want to buy some spare rockers now :-X
|
Re: modify a camshaft
You're better off re-profiling your cams with a file, like the old school machinists used to. It won't be worth your time, even if you work at McDonalds, compared to what one of the regrind companies will do it for... but that's not the point, is it
|
Re: modify a camshaft
ya, i guess it would be quite a bit of work, but the hair on my ass stands up when i think about rockin 300hp on butchered basement cams, i think im gonna try drilling some holes in a extra set of cams i have, and mabe no tapping, just jb weld, i'll do one lobe and see how long that takes, then X16 and i'll see how much beer i have
what do these regrinds usually go for JD? |
Re: modify a camshaft
That's taking JB to a new level. ---- why even mess with an old set of cams. Just make some new ones completely out of JB weld! 8)

Re: modify a camshaft
search around for delta cams... they have great prices on regrinds.

i didnt think it was that crazy, if i really want to prove this will work or wont i can always try it on the cam in my spare car (91 chev sprint 3cyl), 6 lobes on 1 cam then rev the piss out of it, but its a little different in there, the lobes hit the valves directly, no rockers |

Re: modify a camshaft
I belive the studs will break before anything LOL, then the broken part get stuck somewhere and ---- up even more ----.
I mena if you have a spare engine then it`s worth the try lol. IMO better off lay a thick welding on top of the lobes then grind it down. Or, cut out the top half of the lobe form a different car then weld it onto ur cam :S |

dumbest ---- I ever heard. :)

Re: modify a camshaft
delta is still money. I say do it. I did it and it works great

Re: modify a camshaft
fiesable hypothetical thinking is where new ideas come from
props to anyone with that capacity |
Re: modify a camshaft
i vote weld and grind

Re: modify a camshaft
Time vs money - the answer is as obvious as it is individual.

Re: modify a camshaft
I've spoken to machinists who've seen two welded crankshafts that they liked in their lives. That's not a cam, but it gives you an idea of what to expect going that route if you don't find the best welder possible and make a point of not asking how much it costs before you decide who's doing the work.

Re: modify a camshaft
I'd love to see someone attempt to drill and tap an m4 bolt into an oem camshaft.

Re: modify a camshaft
I see what your trying to accomplish here... but your asking for a lot of headache. Tell me... how do you plan to drill the hole perfectly center, perfectly straight, on a rounded surface? Because each lobe would have to be precise. Not only that, but you have no way to accurately check each lobe. Yes you can use a caliper to check the highest points, but only the highest points. Your valves may open the same amount at the peaks, but one may stay open longer than the rest depending on duration. JB Weld is a bad idea, it wont hold, especially once it heats up. Threads would probably hold for a while, but not for a long time. The stress would cause them to get stretched. Even with Loc Tite the bolts would eventually work there way loose.
Another thing... cams are hardened steel. Good luck drilling and making clean threads. I work in a steel manufacturing plant. Hardened steel is not something that can be easily cut or drilled into. |
