i used my chop saw to cut a v and then i finished it off with a grinder. the grinding is what took so long.

Looks like exhaust tubing! What kind of tubing is that?

1/8th wall seamless mild 1.75" od

the dude at the metal shop we buy all of our stuff from at work said its what all the locals use for their roll cages so i would guess itd work well for this. feels a little thinner than the sch 40 manifold tubing accually so i think itll hold up just fine. esspeically with the tri point top corners that will see all the stress in a roll over.

busted my ass keeping the weight out and this was about 55 pounds :-\ >:(

that looks sick are you going to make brackets to bolt it in or are you going to weld it on the floor pan?

It's a little overkill but not too much. 1.5-1.625x.095 would have been fine. My biggest concern with Miata bars is that the bar is both above and well behind the drivers head. Most Miata drivers over 5'9" its simply too hard to make a bar that fits under the top and is still safe for the driver.

so true. it was so hard trying to find the balance of functionality and still being able to put a hard top on. my bar is further back than the hard dog ones but i am still goingto pad it... pretty much a nessesity anyways. as for the height issue that is as high as i can go and still clear a hard top. my helmet is about 1 inch below the highest point on my bar with my seat in auto x position so ill have to mod the seat brackets to lower myself more or take out some padding out the seat so i can be 2" lower than the highest point to be scca legal.

Just for the books, this will not pass any SCCA, IMSA, NRHA, or any other club.

funny how they can turn you around for this and not having a bar is fine in some groups. i wasnt really concerned with passing as much as looking at what they want so i know when i can consider myself to be safe you know.

for mounting my meathod will be to set it in the bar on some 1/8th inch plates that are pre drilled and then take out the bar and drill the car and backing plate and bolt them all in then set the bar back in and weld to the plates. should keep it all lined up right and have the best fitment that way i would think.

Re: miata roll bar

You built a strong peice, but all clubs require a "pretty bar". You have no bars supporting the main hoop.

Randy

o0Quicksilver0o 11-24-2006 11:17 AM

Re: miata roll bar

yea the rear two support the main hoop it will have 4 mounting points. the two rears should keep it from collaspsing. all of the scca legal bars use 4 mounting points. dont really know how you can put any other support bars in unless you did a full cage to the front of the car.

Did you have to lenghten the tubes at the bottoms of the legs?

Also what did you use to bend it? the corners look pretty squished.

Still a darn good job, Doing any cage work is a pita.
Here is the last one I did, was a bugger. But should pass tech for what the truck will run.

I'd take any stock Miata in driving condition with BBS wheels over any Honda any day of the week.
I really oughta replace my civic hatcha s a back-up car with a Miata, or an MR2. Damn that's a good plan for 2007 LoL!

toyotas arn't underated, just to damn expensive.

o0Quicksilver0o 11-25-2006 05:03 PM

Re: miata roll bar

well i say that because alot of people i know dont think twice about those cars when in fact they have more potential than just about any other cheap sports car. theyll seem expensive to the person that dosnt realize everything they are getting. kinda like a soccer mom in an elise.

Toysrme 11-25-2006 11:24 PM

Re: miata roll bar

What ------- MR2 downfalls? They do everything but drift & do it at an ungodly price. They don't like drifting... But otherwise they're cheap & have more potential without spending lots of money than miatas (on a race-track, or drag) if you snag a 3-4K gen1 4a-gze, or a 5-6k gen2 3s-gte.
But that's really splitting hairs. :)
Miatas and MR2's are freaking killer on race-tracks. They take down things they have absolutely no business even being on a track with cost-wise. And MR2's can be surprizingly fast with small boost ugprades & bolt-ons. Real, real easy 13s drag cars. Now the N/A ones. They're not bad. Alot like... Driving a Miata lol! Just it's a Toyota.

o0Quicksilver0o - I'm partial to the MR2, just because they don't cost alot more than old 94 miatas. Get more for the money in my mind. The cost of selling a working 3s-gte & transmission pays for swapping a v6 in, and I know way too much about tuning them so. It's just that the sound of a Toy v6 bouncing around 5500-7000rpm, lotta torque out of corners. And having it mid-engined at the same time. It's addictive. Good stuff for me!

What I'd really like, is a mild turbo v6 swapped MR2, or something like a rebuilt turbo Rover v8 Miata. Either one would just be ungodly on a race track. Wouldn't matter which.

But I do highly advise you. If you like Miata's give all 3 MR2 generations a spin. They are all very different animals. gen1's are light & potentually the fastest, gen3's are new & best handling of the bunch. Gen2 turbo's are the brute fast ones.

Re: miata roll bar

oh i didnt know enough about them to think of mods, simply talking stock. when i spoke of downfalls i am talking about driving one, you have to relearn driving with them again, and if you go back to a front engine car itll take you a while to get used to it again. once you loose grip its hard to stay in control and they dont seem like loads of fun to work on with an engine in the back. they dont have room to put anything but neighther does the miata. like spare tires and such and if you want a t top they compromise alot of things to get that to happen. i was about thiiiis close to saving for one and not doing another miata, but those reasons kept me from doing it. but strong points you make.

Re: miata roll bar

sweet mr2's, but one downfall of them is you cant save your ---- on a turn if you didn't calculate the speed right like you can on non midship cars. loosing midship cars out from under you ------- sucks because there's no getting them back.

how does it fit and how does the tranny fit

BTW does the avalon and camry shares the same 3.5?

Toy v6's fit great. They're quite compact.
In the case of a gen2 MR2, the v6's fet better than the i4's in the engine bay. Better than the Camry platforms they come out of in the case of the car engines. If you can do physically do a 3s-gte + E153 transmission swap. You can do a v6 + E53 swap & have more clearance. The trnasmissions are of the same family. With the linkage on the oppoiste sides & the gear ratios being signifigantly different.

BTW does the avalon and camry shares the same 3.5?
The entire Camry platform always shares engines & engine families.
