ok take in mind here, previous to this I have had no more experience than welding in gr.9 metal shop :8

Using a miller stick welder

first try was the washer to angle iron then small piece to big piece.

you need to steady your hand. get practice. depth, and bead look alright. ALSO stop doing the start, slow down, speed up, slow down with the electrode when you weld.

The only way to get better is to practice. way back when i was just learning to stick weld i just took a plate and ran as many beads as i possibly could fit

I hate stick welding with a passion. My father is incredible at it, he's been stick welding for about 3 decades now, only does stainless because all the stuff he builds is for his sailboat.

It does take a lot of practice to get a consistant bead, but with that being said, you might want to prep your metal a bit before you try to lay down a consistant weld.

more heat, less travel speed & use the correct rod travel angle, and rod to work angles.
