Default Homemade Merge collector 16g

Hi guys,

Thought I would try and make a merge collector for a 4-1 dc2 manifold I was building. I used an angle grinder and a flap disc to create this. I used 15 degree bends and kinda just eyeballed it all. Not fully finished yet but getting there.

Let's see an inside shot of the collector.

Will do when I get more gas to backpurge it. What I did was weld the halves separately inside and out and also polished it with a carbide burr and grinding stone. this just means I don't have as much welding to do on the inside when both pieces are together. I've got an extra long cup for the welding of the inside but I don't think it's gonna be easy.

thats good. does your torch give you room enough to weld the four runners to the collector?

I should be able to get the long cup in there. It's nice and narrow. Plus the bottom portion will be cut off first to leave a 2.5 inch bore so I should have a bit more room to work in.

So you'll weld the runners to the collector from the inside? How do you purge the outside of the pipe? flux? or are you just grinding what "black boogers" show up afterwards?

No way I could do a nice even full pen weld from the inside of the pipe without making a mess on the outside....

I was working on some 16 ga collector stuff myself today. I need to spend more time inventing ways to backpurge "odd" shapes with lots of holes like collectors. I could not get the gas coverage I wanted on the inside...

It's only the very center part that needs welding on the inside. I'm gonna try a special way of purging that portion on the outside. Most people don't and just leave the black crust on the outsde as you can't really see it.

I can't leave black crust on stuff... not a fan of the black crust...

I see what you mean though- purge in where they merge together, weld the roughly 25% of the weld around the inside, then purge inside the collector and weld the rest as normal.
