Hang on, I can do it so you can...

To all ham handed coons like me... I did it (and will surely redo it when everything will fall apart on the first road test :1...)

Don't give up. Do it.

Will breathe better now (2 1/2" mandrel instead of smaller than 1 7/8" crushed).

Hi flow cat is just for pose.

If the car isnt boosted yet, I'd recommend throwing in a resonator/glasspack. I can assure you that if its NA and theres no resonator, you'll get some sexy rasp around 3k rpms, i know from experience lol. Good job on the building, exhausts are annoying to make :y

Very nice, especially with no mockup.

I agree. I put basically the same setup on my na civic and it was too loud to even talk on my cell phone at cruising speeds on the highway. Still cant believe how much the turbo quiets the exhaust down.

I rock 2 resonators and I'm boosted... quiet ftw.

Indeed, making exhaust is tedious (for me at least). It took me about 20 hours to assemble. The fun part (measuring, cut saw, tack weld, fit test under the car, gravel in the butt crack, repeat) took about 12-14 hours. Finishing the welds took 6-8 hours. I thought that finishing the welds would go faster but I’ve realized 2 things:

1-Welding tube to tube isn’t easy as it seems because melt through is always on the edge.
2-The bigger the piece becomes as you weld to it, the more difficult it becomes do a good welding job. It is easy to weld 2 one foot piece of tube together, to weld a lined up flange at the end of a 10 feet exhaust line standing off balance without a helper hand is something else. Even harder if you have no working table like the dumbass that I am. Hats off to everyday welders / fabricators, you guys rock.

Muffler is a cheap brand (flowsound). Tube and bends comes from exhaust direct performance in Ontario, Canada. Good prices, good service, good delivery. Magnaflow hi flow cat (might get ditched sometimes). Flat black BBQ paint for the line, black regular tremclad for the muffler (ran out off hi temp paint, duh).

This is for a Gen 2 teg turbo setup (yawn, yes one more) so I don’t worry about sound level. If I get annoyed by the cops, I’ll put a resonator (read test tube) instead of the cat.

I still have the downpipe - flex to fabricate, I’ve ordered a short radius elbow, I’m unable to clear under-engine /crossmember linking brace.

Rock on

Ha, alll these things are so true when fabbing exhausts, its very tedious. I recently switched from flux core to a Lincoln gas setup, my welds have improved exponentially. Nice work, it looks great.

Re: Hang on, I can do it so you can...

On the setup I did on my DA I ended up just removing that brace, there was pretty much no way to fit the downpipe down there without doing so. I had it pretty close but I was afraid it would vibrate against that peice so i just pulled it all together and refabbed a better fitting downpipe. Dont think it really had any affects on handling.

nice work.
I am doing one from 2.1/2 to 3" with a magnaflow muffler, and one resonator. I wanna go stainless, or aluminized

I'm not trying to get off topic here but how do you guys keep the exhaust from sagging towards the ground right at the bend that turns right (looking from the rear) My exhaust is too low to the ground.

I tried zip ties once on my CRX but they melted so I bought some bungie tie down straps and it held great for over a year.

Man the aluminized steel is a pain in the ass to tig incase you're thinking of tigging it. Mig and Argon/Co2 mix seems to work better with that stuff. At least for me.

rudebwoy 06-04-2007 12:24 PM

Re: Hang on, I can do it so you can...

I dont have a tig welder, I have a flux mig to mock it up, and I know a shop that do good welds for cheap to finish it.

Wow nice work! Your stock exhaust looks to be in pretty good condition also, mine is rusted up like hell.

Ha, no, thank you sir, I won't have another (for a while at least).

Now a little DP action... time meter for the exhaust / DP at about 30 hours now and still rolling

Attachment 26580

Schedule 40 short radius elbow (petrochemical plant thank you)

Attachment 26581

Little cutie HMT 5 bolt flange (While at the press drill, I made a second one, has I redo everything twice in this f**cking project)

Attachment 26582

All goes on this gorgeous manifold with a toilet positionned wastegate, fabbed a while ago (repost).

Attachment 26583

All of the above, cute and ugly at the same time.

Install pics sometimes, now I must take care of my wife before she starts to complain of me loving this steel to much.

Adios :8

That's truly awesome. I love the HMT flanges, r u gonna round off the corners or just rock it like it is? Either way, props to you man.

Ludique 06-12-2007 08:19 PM

Re: Hang on, I can do it so you can...

Why cut some corners on that nice flange?, It fits as it is and, anyway, I'm almost out of grinder wheels...

klyph 06-12-2007 08:36 PM

Re: Hang on, I can do it so you can...

Ya, like they say, don't cut any corners. ROFL

Sorry man, I'm sure you don't want to leave you car here for mockup, fabrication and fitting during 4 weeks... ;)

Seriously, go to a muffler shop and ask them for a quote. Maybe if you're not in a rush and if they work on it on loose time, you might get an honest price. I recall asking a muffler shop to do this , they asked me around 400$. Consider that I have about 200ish$ of material and that I spent about 30 hours on it (I know I'm not a pro, but still, it couldn't be made in 2 hours) 400$ wasn't such a bad price.

I used the stock rubber hangers. I welded support rod that i bent on exhaust tubing as hooks.

Re: Hang on, I can do it so you can...

I have done 2 exhausts the same way, I'm about to pretty much re-do the 2nd one. It gets much easier the more you do them, but it's still a pain in the ass.

Open DP is way easier >:D

For your first exhaust, you did a badass job.
