I have a 1992 honda prelude si that is turbocharged. i am in search of more power but i am on a budget so i have been completing projects as i have time here and there. here are some that i am currently working on. If you have any tips, suggestions or questions just let me know.

Catch can setup: The catch can replaces the battery and vents the valve cover to the atmosphere.

the next project that i am working on is a custom intake manifold. this will retain the stock throttle body. it has 1.61" I.D. 1.9" O.D. runners, a 3.6L plenum and 4.5" runners. The plemun is a little over 1.5 times the volume of my motor. the runners are half of the stock 9" length. here are some pics of what i have got done so far.

Fabrication update: I decided to step up my game a little bit. A friend of mine has a mill and a lathe at his house so I decided to take full advantage. I cut the plenum's final shape and it is test fitted and ready for the lid to be welded on. We machined bores in the plenum floor to a 1.872" size. You will notice that the tops of the runners also have a 1.872" register machined at the tops of them for a nice and tight press fit. The registers are exactly .233" long so the fit exactly flush with the floor of the plenum. They are also radiused so they are smooth flowing and require no inside cleanup.

We also machined a double barbed water neck to replace the stock one an to delete the two additional water ports for the iacv. They would be a pain in the ass to retain for relocating the iacv to below the new intake manifold because I want it hidden. It also does not get that cold in Florida. Finally I gave all components a light polish prior to final assembly. Now its time for pictures.

Clean work. Sell your boat to free up cash for projects. :)

g-gameslude 01-12-2010 01:56 PM

Its not my boat. It is more of a table to me. I am thinking of adding some bends to the runners to raise the manifold in the car because it is almost toushing the rear motor mount.

Atreidies 01-12-2010 08:04 PM

Almost only counts in Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, but if it helps you sleep at night, go ahead. And sell your dad's boat, he won't notice. Until spring.

I got a little more work done. Let me know what you think of the welds.

What happened on the TB plate? Looks irregular and like it got too much heat when welding.

g-gameslude 01-25-2010 05:24 PM

Oh that little guy. I would not worry about that little guy. That cast aluminum is kind of shitty to weld to. I should have hit it with a grinder before I tacked it into place. I guess the wire brush just was not enough.

Boozle 01-25-2010 07:28 PM

why retain the stock TB if you are going through the work of making a custom intake manifold? Also if you havent already you should try and make some bell shaped entry for the runners... more flow.

g-gameslude 01-26-2010 12:28 PM

I have already bored the stock throttle body to 64mm from the stock 60mm and installed a new brass plate. I see no need to buy a new throttle body for a 2-4mm larger bore. The main reason for this is cost. I have less than $70 in parts so far and I would like to keep it that way. The inside of the runnersis radiused so I do not think that I will see any greater flow gains unless I spend $40 a piece for velocity stacks.

This is how the plenum floor looks.

I think that this a superior design to those with velocity stacks for turbocharged cars. Companies like virtual works have smooth entry runners that out flow veilside velocity stack runners by almost 30%. The velocity stacks cause turbulance which disrupts the air flow.

Sweet

Atreidies 02-07-2010 10:57 PM

Too clean for HMT. You could've at least JBwelded the vacuum ports. ;) Nice work bro. Now, you just gotta figure out a price and sell them bitches on H-T.

g-gameslude 02-08-2010 12:35 PM

How does $500 sound?

Atreidies 02-08-2010 12:52 PM

I think you would sell them like hotcakes. There are also some accord/prelude specific forums that would go for it. Even more so if you got some dyno numbers.

g-gameslude 02-13-2010 02:42 PM

I would like to get some flowbench testing to compare stock and the custom intake manifolds before I put it on the car to tune. But I will have to find a flowbench first.

Reyke 04-18-2010 09:36 PM

wow I have been contemplating doing a manifold for the b20 in my 89 lude and that is just too nice, kudos on the work and hope it performs the way you anticipate it to

g-gameslude 04-19-2010 02:47 PM

I will be flow bench testing it along with real world testing is as soon as my motor gets put back together.

josh19wrc 04-19-2010 04:50 PM

have you run that bored out throttle body yet? there is A LOT of measurement that goes into a TB, and they actually are not round, at least they aren't supposed to be... If you haven't run it yet, Id be surprised if it works right, and I dont mean that as an insult to your machining skills. Your stock 60mm TB has a cross sectional area of 2,826 sq. mm. rebored to 64mm gives you 3215, a 13.7% improvement. However, GM LS1 throttle bodies are $10 a pop in the you pull it yards around here and are 75mm (and still cable actuated, unlike the 90mm LS2 body, which is drive by wire), which gives you a whopping 4416 sq. mm, which is almost 2X the stocker...

g-gameslude 05-01-2010 05:16 PM

I have ran the bored throttle body and it worked fine. It felt a lot like stock. It is a 67mm opening that tapers to a 64mm opening. It has pretty much the same shape as stock. I will soon be upgrading to a 68mm STR unit. 71mm tapered to 68mm. We will see how it works.

Real nice work, making aluminum welds look nice is a real skill.
