Go kart modifications

I picked this thing up for $60 from 89shithatch a few days ago. It didn't run when I got it, but after changing the carb gaskets, diaphragm, and cleaning the rust out of the tank it fired right up. It has a B&S 5 HP engine. Right now it's set up for a smaller kid so I need to move the pedals forward and redo the steering mount, and I will probably have to add a frame extension up front. I originally planned on extending the frame in the middle but then my turning radius would suck. Next step is cutting off the steering column support hoop and figuring out a new way so mount it where my legs can stay towards the center of the kart instead of reaching awkwardly around the steering hoop. Here's a few pics of it and an engine shot when I had the carb and gas tank off earlier today. I'll update with more pics as I go.

move engine back, lengthen the chain. thatll give you 8-10" more room for you. you can just raise the front and rearend like 6" above what it is now, and extend the pedals forward (bumper protection permitting)

send me the head/block i'll port/polish, and shave the head/clearance the valves for you :-*

You got a cage on that thing, right? :)

Only safety gear this has is a GM seat belt.

Re: Go kart modifications

This is just a cheap project for now, and the 200cc 5 HP engine on it runs fine now. It does look like there's plenty of room for a bigger engine though :6

Update:

Got the steering support hoop remounted today :D There's much more room for my legs now and the wheel isn't jammed into my crotch anymore. Just gotta work on the new pedal mounts now.

Old vs. new:

Re: Go kart modifications

I was thinking of instead of having your legs go through the steering support hoop. Why not give the support a coke bottle shape and have it curve in and have your leg go on the outside of it? Just hack off the sides of the hoop just before the steering column. Flip them around so the curve is on the bottom and the straight parts attach to the sides of the steering column thingy? Like this

JIL (Just think of the "L" as a backwards J. lol. and the "I" as the steering column.)

HMTguy 06-08-2008 01:30 PM

Re: Go kart modifications

My legs do go outside of it now. It's sort of hard to tell from the pics, but the frame gets narrower towards the front end. There's still plenty of room for my legs to go around it.

Briggs engines suck in general. They take the shittiest materials and manufacturing processes and charge just as much as Honda or Kawasaki... pure profit generation. It's a pity they're so popular. The OHV ones are a little different though, I'd find a horizontal shaft 16hp Vanguard and throw it on that bitch.

Put a snowmobile engine and clutch on it. Something like a Polaris 600cc Triple would turn that into a death machine.
